Polemi Gorge

Heavy Going

This is a bird's eye view of the area just in front of the crack. That would take an awful lot of hacking to get through.

Downstream

Approaching from the other side of the gorge could also be an option. I could stand on the big rocky outcrop next to the gorge then, and dangle the 360 camera down on a long pole. But how do I get to the other side of the gorge? There is no bridge, yet in the past people were obviously able to get there because of all the mining that went on.

And what's that interesting rock formation in the distance?

More To Come

Clearly I am not done exploring this countryside just yet. Those rocks look like they might have an interesting story to tell. Again though, how do you get to them?

Downstream

Approaching from Downstream is not really an option. It is a very pretty scene though.

Old Friend

I then realised something that totally surprised me. In this drone shot, you can see the road I was on on the far left. The latest interesting rocks are just below sight, but what's that on the right? There is a building there and a track. It suddenly dawned on me that I had visited this building when I found Polemi Pond, and that the pond itself is technically in this shot, just obscured by the trees. So if I drove back to there, it would be a simple walk to the other side of the gorge, and to the rock formation.

Polemi Pond

Outside of Winter and Spring, a lot of Cyprus is very arid. Polemi, centrally placed in Paphos and surrounded by vineyards, remains greener than most. It even has a village pond. Admitedly, you have to go for a bumpy drive to find it, and very few people probably know that it is there, but find it we did.

The Crystal Hills of Polemi

We were introduced to the Crystal Hills a few years back. It was the first time we visited Polemi and we were on the hunt for geocaches. This particularly one was a near perfect example of what makes a good cache: an interesting location that we would have been unlikely to find had there not been a cache there. The only thing that let the cache down was it's size, but we won't go into that here. Instead we shall have a look at the terrain, and see why the cache was called "The Crystal Hill".
