Necessary Bridge

This bridge is definitely needed. During wet winters, this dried-up stream becomes a raging torrent.

Ruinous Wall

I don't like the wall here though. It blocks the view of the nice rocks.

Towards Lara Bay

If you continue along this road you eventually get to Lara Bay. You can take a number of roads along the way which will bring you to the top end of the Akamas. Presumably most of these will be renovated too. Will that destroy the Akamas? Not really. It is huge. What might happen though, is that some of the wilder beaches will get the same treatment as White River Beach. Those cairns could prove a hindrance to turtles looking for nest sites.

What I don't think will happen though, is that the Akamas will be ruined by hoards of tourists taking advantage of the easier access.

Firstly, let's take a look at Cape Greco, in the East of the Island. This has better roads, but is still a wilderness, though on a much smaller scale.

Secondly, I don't think that most of the public are actually that interested in it anyway.

Why don't I think people are interested? Over the last seven years we have published countless articles and films on the Paphos Region. By far the most popular concern Paphos City and the major beaches. The countryside is one of the least popular topics, beating only charity reports and green issues in terms of public engagement. People just aren't as interested in the Akamas as they are in the Seafront, Archaeological Park and other attractions.

Personally I think that is a shame, as I enjoy researching the countryside articles more than the others. However, it is what it is. Numbers don't lie.

It does however raise an issue. Why bother with renovating the Akamas roads at all? Who will benefit? People not interested won't suddenly have a change of heart. But people who like it how is at the moment might be put off visiting in future. There is a danger that the renovations could do more harm than good, and that is without even considering their environmental impact. Time will tell...
