Geroskipou Bypass

Published 4th of September, 2019

It has been announced that there is to be a new bypass built between Paphos and Geroskipou. Responses to this news were mixed, but we think it is a good idea. We decided to visit the area to see where the bypass will go and who it will benefit. Besides, the map had shown that there was a flea market in the area. What was that all about...?

We shall start by the MacDonalds opposite Blue Cross Medical Centre. Behind us is the Old Paphos Mall, now deserted. The bypass is due to begin here.

Distant Industrial Area

If you drive down the road between the abandoned Mall and MacDonalds, you soon come to this dead end.

Mysterious Gorge

The gorge here is formed by the occasional stream Limnaria, which flows through Paphos towards the sea. I was once going to do a blog about it, by following its course. However, most of it goes through less salubrious areas where rubbish is plentiful. So it wasn't a pleasant walk. Once the bypass is complete there will be a bridge here, as there is quite a gorge in amongst all that undergrowth.

Idle Lands

We have now driven down to the Debenhams Roundabout and turned left. We have then taken the first left. You will soon see that there is a lot of unused space. There are even roads built here, waiting for development.

One large complex has been part built here, but I think the project has stalled. I haven't seen any activity for the last few years.

A Geroskipou Mini Mystery

After our last blog of the strange monument near Mandria, we were delighted with the response, so we thought we would post these pictures of another forgotten site, this time in the heart of Geroskipou. Did anybody work on this site in the past, and if so, can they say why excavation work seems to have halted mid dig?

Geroskipou Sculpture Park

As part of Pafo2017, a new Sculpture Park was commissioned in Geroskipou. Inspired by local history, legends and traditions, ten Cypriot and foreign sculptors have created on-site works drawing on the history of the area and, in this way, leaving behind them the traces of the European Capital of Culture. That's what the blurb says anyway. So what are they like?
