Trozena Reborn

Published 10th of June, 2025

A few years ago we visited the abandoned village of Trozena, at the top end of the Diarizos Valley. Other than the church, the buildings were in a state of crumbling decay. We recently drove past again, and got a bit of a shock. Come found out why!

Before we get to the nuts and bolts of this article I want to explain how to get here. You can either come from the direction of Dora (and tonight's film will help you out there), or you can approach from the top end of the Diarizos Valley. When you get here, you can either drive to the church, or park outside the village and explore on foot. If driving to the church, you will need to start by the Bailey Bridge and drive up from there. The turning from the direction of Dora is far too sharp for a car, so drive down to the bridge and turn there.

In the first picture, we've taken a side track just above the Trozena junction and parked there. This way we won't get in the way of any builders.

We also drove down to the church where we flew the drone. Here's a view of the village. A lot of it is still in a state of decay, but compared with the article on Trozena we wrote a few years ago, it is looking a lot better already.

We shall begin our article at the top of the village and head to the church as we go on. The first thing we noticed was the Builder's Van, complete with a logo for Trozena. I briefly chatted to the driver as he drove off and he said they were renovating the whole village.

Start As You Mean To Go On

They have certainly made an impressive start. This used to be an overgrown mess.

There was a sign at the top explaining the project. One side was in Greek, the other English. This is what it said:

Welcome to the New Trozena

Trozena was once a vibrant village, filled with the lively sounds of everyday life. For decades, it has stood nearly empty, a quiet witness to the passing of time. But in this stillness lies a unique opportunity, a chance to bring new life to a place we hold close to our hearts.

We envision a new Trozena, a place where visitors from near and far come together to enjoy life's simple pleasures. Here, the past meets the present, and the spirit of the village continues to thrive. We aima to honor Trozena's rich history while creating a shared future, where every visitor adds a new chapter to its story.

Join us on its journey to create a place where new memories are made, and old ones are fondly remembered.

Abandoned Villages - Trozena

If you've driven over the iron bridge which lies just beyond the abandoned village of Gerovasa, near the outskirts of Paphos Forest, then you will also have driven past the abandoned village of Trozena. Unless you are very observant, you won't have noticed it though, as it is barely visible from the road. It is worth taking a detour to explore the ruins, as these photos will hopefully show...

Trozena Waterfall

When we visited Trozena last May, we read about a mysterious waterfall. Mysterious because though we could see remnants of an old stream in a picnic area between the village and the church, there was no waterfall at all. But then it rained. A lot. And somebody said there was a waterfall at Trozena. So we went and had a look. If you see one water feature after all the rains, you should make sure it is this one. It is spectacular...
