Wax Fertility Votives

If you haven't seen these little babies before, they are used in fertility prayers. They are a common sight in Cypriot churches, along with wax limbs, which are used in healing prayers.

Over the past few months we have covered some stunning murals in ancient churches, that really put these to shame. Fortunately, all the kitties outside more than make up for this though, so let's go outside again and have another look at them.

Presumably these are being cleaned...

Drinking Fountain

We visited the church a few times to take photos, mainly for the cats. On one occasion I was sat by this fountain, playing with some of them, and a car pulled up. I wasn't paying the car much attention, and was half-expecting to be told off for being mean to the cats (the Paphos Cat Lady scarred me for life when she mistook by 360 camera for a walking stick!). However, a little kitten shot towards me from the direction of the car, and it was clear it had just been released from a bag. Whoever was in the car, they were dumping cats here. Now, for all I know, this is a tradition or something, but it did strike me as rather odd behaviour. The kitten was quite frightened, but was soon checked over by a couple of the older cats, who didn't seem surprised by the unfolding events.

More Cats

Alex was in her element in the grounds of the church. The cats were happy to pose so she got some lovely close-ups.

In our blogs, we've looked at ancient churches, and the highly adorned churches you find in the more populated areas, but we haven't really examined the traditional village church. With that in mind, I am planning a few blogs which will feature such places of worship. So let's start the ball rolling, and travel to Kannivou to visit this lovely church on the hill.

Let's take a little break from flowers. I know that Cyprus looks lovely in the Spring, and that it abounds with colour and life. But it' time to take a break. With the Polemi Tulip Festival fast approaching, and the knowledge that another road trip from Max is just around the corner too, I think we need to look at something without petals.
