St George's Beach Renovation
Over the last few weeks we have noticed that some work has been going on down at St George's Beach in Chloraka. We've brought you numerous drone films of the area but thought it about time we paid it a closer look. It turns out that proceedings were more advanced than we thought...
Now That's Confusing!

When we arrived on the hill above the beach area, we were greeted by this nice big sign. Apparently, this is going to be called Alyki Beach. I cannot help but think that it will get confused with the existing beach in the centre of Paphos, called Alykes Beach. Especially as Alykes is pronounced "Alykey". Who thinks these names through? It seems fairly common practice in Cyprus to piggyback on somebody else's existing name rather than come up with your own original one. I thought perhaps that I was being harsh, and that in Greek the two words meant something different. But according to Google Translate, they aren't actual Greek words, other than names.
You see this elsewhere too. In our village Polemi, there is a very nice bar called Corner Cafe and Bar. Somebody set up another coffee shop, and they called it Corner Bar, or Corner Cafe. But either way, you see the pattern. And the Facebook group "We Love Cyprus" now has a competitor called "I Love Cyprus", and another called "We Love Paphos".
It's all a bit silly.
Close Up

Anyway, this isn't supposed to be a rant, so let's see what Alyki Beach will have to offer. I am guessing the above icons mean: Lifeguard, First Aid, Toilets, Showers, Sunbeds, Water Sports, Paragliding, Parking and Wifi.
Ground View

Now, before you put on your grockle hat and dash down for a dip in the ocean, do bear in mind that the beach isn't finished yet.
If you are looking for a beach to go to today (even though it is cloudy as I write this in a Coffee Shop in The Mall), then check out our Guide To South Coast Paphos Beaches. And for even more information, check out our Beaches Directory.
The Big Picture

The area on the left of the picture gives us a clue as to how the rest of the beach will eventually look.
To The Left

Here there are three, layered rows of sunbeds, with some beach area in front of them.

eBookCyprus Road Trip 01: the Kathikas - Panagia Loop
Let me take you on a journey around the region of Paphos, Cyprus. Starting at Paphos itself, we travel to Akoursos, then Kathikas, Kritou Terra and Simou. We continue past Lasa and Kannaviou, before taking in the delights of Panagia. Getting a bit more adventurous, we visit the abandoned villages of Statos and Agios Fotios, before passing through Choulou, Letymbou and Polemi, and rejoining the main Paphos - Polis road.
The route is suitable for all types of vehicle, and requires no off-roading. The guide contains about 130 photographs including shots of all the road signs you need to pay attention to, as well as some of the highlights you may experience along the way.
There are also several maps which will help you keep your bearings.
You can do this journey in a day, or you can break it up into chunks. You can also do it in reverse, to get some completely different views. It is entirely up to you.
