Neon Mall Expansion Update
They are expanding Neon Mall. We first showed you pictures of the work a few months ago. A few days ago we took the drone back to see how they are getting along. We also dug up some images showing what it will look like once complete.
The Big Picture

It was October when we first reported on the Neon Mall Expansion. The main takeaway from that was the following quote from Cyprus Business News:
The proposed new building is an extension of the existing building that will be joined internally. It will consist of a basement, ground floor, mezzanine and two floors. The basement will include parking spaces, warehouses, a reception area, four small shops and sanitary facilities. On the ground floor there will be four shops with a mezzanine and sanitary facilities. The mezzanine of two of the four stores on the ground floor will include a kitchen, sanitary facilities and showers.

As well as the new shops, I was particularly interested to find out about improved access. So news of the new roundabout and filter into the dual carriageway was greatfully received. For the full story check out the link above.

The computer model of how the project will look is very encouraging.
Busy

I have to confess to being a bit of a sucker for Construction Sites. Though I have worked in I.T all my life, one of my first post-University jobs was for Mowlem Management. They were building two of the Office Blocks at Cabot Square in Canary Wharf, right next to the big tower. I was responsible for maintaining their on-site Computer Networks and writing databases to aid their management role. It was great fun. I remember once needing to lay some more cable, which involved climbing on the roof of their temporary site offices and banging a hole through the ceiling with a screwdriver. Good times! It was pre-Windows as well. So a shout out to all those who remember Lotus 123, dBase and Wordstar!
Anyway, seeing huge buildings get built from close up has left me always fascinated with the process. I know first-hand the logistics involved, and can appreciate the complexity of the process.
Slip Road

Of course, on Canary Wharf, it was more complicated than this. The concrete had to come in on barges, and timings were critical. Losing your slot was not an option.
Oh and they had THE best works canteen. There were a lot of mouths to feed, and pretty much everything came with chips.
Olympia and York, the Company who owned Canary Wharf went bankrupt in the early 90s. This comes from their Wikipedia page:
In March 1992, Paul Reichmann was forced to resign as president. In May, the company filed for bankruptcy and it owed over 20 billion dollars to various banks and investors. The company was finally dismembered in February 1993, and the Reichmanns were left with only a small rump known as Olympia & York Properties Corporation. The new company has again grown into a multibillion-dollar firm, including retaining a large stake of the now prosperous Canary Wharf project. However, they no longer have large holdings in New York City. Many of the NYC properties are now under Brookfield Properties.
