Road Closed?

Anyway, I found my back to the main track and once again headed downhill. There were numerous other side tracks after this one, all leading to the right. Each of them led to dead ends though. At the dead ends there were parking areas, and lots of discarded shotgun cartridges and associated rubbish. So I can only presume the tracks are made for the benefit of hunters. You would think, given that the Forestry Department go to such trouble to accommodate the hunters, that they would clear up after themselves. But noooooo.

Anyway, after a while I arrived at this sign. It says the road ahead is closed. The right turn was yet another dead end though, and the Road Closed sign looked very old, so I thought I would chance my luck.

More Ruins

There are signs of another small building here. I wonder what it was?

More Forest

I walked beyond the ruins, but all I could see ahead of me was more forest. Hard to believe that Peyia is just around the corner.

Road Open

There was nothing wrong with the state of the road, and there were plenty of fresh tyre tracks. I think at some point they had put a gate here though. You can just see a pillar in the centre of the picture. I imagine there was a barrier spanning the track at this point, for some reason.

Yet Another Junction

Now the next junction we encountered was a bit more interesting. The main track went to the right, which was to our liking. However, the left hand track wasn't a dead end. It crossed a smaller gorge and headed off towards Peyia. I had no intention of going that way, for a reason that will become clear. In fact, I left the car here and followed the left-hand track on foot.

The Akamas By Car

Nothing beats exploring the Akamas by car. A decent 4x4 can take you to places you would never normally find on foot, and the aircon can be a real life-saver. Some routes into the Akamas are bumpier than others. In this blog take a relatively bump free route which would suite the more cautious amongst you.
