Kritou Terra - Part 1
Going Up
That's all the text from the sign. We will visit the various places mentioned over the course of this article. Now I want to cover an issue Kritou Terra has; its declining population. After WW2, the population of Kritou Terra was 648, 98 of which were Turkish Cypriot. As a result of local tensions that resulted from the intercommunal conflict of late 1963, the TC fled to Terra. By 1976, the population had shrunk to 316. By 2001 it was down to 92. According to Wikipedia, the 2011 census figure quoted a population of only 86.
On the face of it, this could explain the state of this cafe and the fountain area. Is it down to a simple lack of available workforce in the area? The population decline is put down to younger Cypriots preferring to move to the cities.
But there have been positive enhancements to the village. The roads have been improved. A carpark above the waterfall has been installed, and they are even charging an admission now.
Anyway, once I had left the cafe, I went up the leaf-covered staircase next to it.
On The Road Again
I found myself back on the main road, by the memorial fountain I showed you earlier. You can just see the edge of that on the left. It is time to move on, so go back to the area by the olive press or wherever you left your car.
This Way
I haven't been to Kritou Terra in the heart of summer, so I have no idea how busy it gets. A lot of the roads are narrow though, so drive slowly and keep your eyes alert.
Another Junction
This is your next point of interest. You can either park here or continue down the road on the left, where you will soon arrive at a bigger (relatively) car park.
Village Centre?
I'm not sure if this is officially the centre of the village, but there is a shop here and the community building.

Let me take you on a journey around the region of Paphos, Cyprus. Starting at Paphos itself, we travel to Akoursos, then Kathikas, Kritou Terra and Simou. We continue past Lasa and Kannaviou, before taking in the delights of Panagia. You can do this journey in a day, or you can break it up into chunks. You can also do it in reverse, to get some completely different views. It is entirely up to you.
