Panagia Salamiotissa Monastery
Well Kept Church
The first thing we noticed was how well-kept the place was. I should point out, that we visited outside of the tourist season, and nobody was about. These pictures were taken on December 6th of last year. That seems a lifetime away now...
Modern Monastery
The monastery itself is modern. However, it is built on an ancient site. The chapel we saw in the previous picture dates from 1550, and is all that remains of the original buildings.
Very little is known about the original monastery, though it is a popular tourist attraction. Apparently it contains various icons, though we didn't try and go in to look at them as the place looked shut. Instead we had a wander around the well-kept gardens.
Awwww....
This was an unexpected treat!
Lovebirds
Never was a bird more aptly named. Ok, thinking about it, blackbirds are very aptly named, so scratch that analogy. But they certainly looked a cute couple. Lovebirds can live for 20-30 years, and I would imagine their monogamy would be appreciated by the residents of the monastery.
I do like the garden here.
