Xeros River Ruins

What a Hoot

As I reached the tower and peered over the edge into the hole below, I startled a magnificent owl that had obviously been sleeping down there. It flapped its wings at me, and wanted to fly away but was afraid to fly past me. This gave me sufficient time to take a rather panicked photograph.

Close Up

We've definitely seen more owls than normal this year. They must have liked the winter rain.

I tell you what though, I wouldn't want to fall down that hole. Given that they have sealed up the entrance at the bottom, you would have a hard time getting out again...

The Ruins Themselves

And as for the ruins themselves, well, they were rather disappointing. There wasn't even an outdoor oven to awake my curiosity. Just a series of abandoned rooms that were probably associated with the mill at one point. However, the owl, fox and lovely swimming pool finds more than made up for this.

This is what I love about exploring in Cyprus. There is always something interesting out there, just waiting for you to find it. If you decided to visit this mill and the swimming pool, but got completely lost along the way and ended up somewhere totally different, you would still have a whale of a time. All you have to do is take the time to look. Cyprus will have no problem in letting you see something magnificent.

Where's My Ball

So now you know the answer to our latest Spot The Ball riddle.

Xeros Valley Calm

It was here, overlooking an abandoned water mill, in the middle of nowhere.

Well, I did say it would be a difficult one this time.

But there's more. On the way back to Polemi, we went past an old church half way up the hill. That will get it's own blog. Not only that, but we filmed the journey from Pentalia to Polemi, and you can now view that as well. It is over half an hour long, but has some nice music to go with it, and the vineyards look lovely. We post our videos on Facebook and Youtube. However, I am also adding a section to Paphos Life itself, so you can find them all under one roof. The section is not quite finished yet, but you can view the Pentali-Polemi video here.

I will do a separate blog of the journey itself, as somebody was asking about the route. For now though, just enjoy the clip.

And, if you enjoy exploring, be sure to check out our two road trip eBooks, now available on Amazon. They will be right up your street.

The Xeros River in Winter

The Asprokremmos Reservoir is beginning to fill up! At the last count, it was close to 40% full. But where is all the water coming from? The Xeros River is normally close to dry, but now it has become a raging torrent. So let's take a look...

Sinti Monastery

It's time for another guest blog, and this time Max has taken a break from his minerals to show us somewhere a bit more spiritual. Over to you Max... Sinti Monastery is a very important ancient monument and not far away from Paphos, in the beautiful Xeros River Valley. I thought I would take a round trip. In order that people can visit the place all year round (even after a good Winter's rain) in a normal car I took the longer route over the hills where the roads nowadays are all properly surfaced. On the way back you can either take the same road (Winter) or use the short cut along the Xeros river bed which is only 8 km until the next village Nata.
