The Kourion Coastline
Kourion was an important ancient Greek city-state on the southwestern coast of Cyprus. Now it is famous for its lovely beach and the ancient earthquake-damaged ruins that adorn the hillside. It is also a very popular paragliding spot. In this article you get to see why...
Kourion Beach
To get to Kourion Beach, and to the viewpoing I launched our drone from, you should take the motorway from Limassol to Paphos and turn left when you see signs for Episkopi. And if you are coming from Paphos, you should go through the tunnel first, then look for the Episkopi turning. Of course, you could always drive through the Episkopi Garrison instead.
Towards Limassol
In this shot, looking east, the salt lakes extend out to sea, giving the impression of a remote, deserted landscape. In actual fact, the bustling city of Limassol lies just to the left of picture.
Launch View
I parked at the rear entrance of the Kourion Archaeological Park to fly my drone. I remember thinking at the time that there was a large tarpaulined area that made the immediate surroundings look a bit ugly. It was only when I looked up Kourion on Wikipedia, and read about the paragliding, that I realised that I was probably looking at a launch site for paragliders. Great minds think alike, as it was an ideal location for launching yourself - or your drone - into the air.
Interesting Rocks
I flew the drone around the beach and the rocky coastline, and it made a nice short film. You can see it in the link below. I shall return when it is a bit warmer to have a swim and do a thorough report on the beach. By all accounts it is very nice and has two nice restaurants.
The Short Film
This was the film I made. It is only a couple of minutes long. One thing you can't really appreciate on the film is the cliffs. I took some still photographs of them though, so we can have a better look...
