Polis Christmas Village
Jewellery
You could get all sorts of Christmas gifts here too.
Central Stage
Like the other Christmas Villages, Polis also had some special events running during its opening times. When I visited they were showing a Shadow Theatre.
17:30–18:30
Title: Theatre Show – “The Christmas Thief from Karakiozis’ Village”
Location: Polis Square
Description: Holiday shadow theatre performance with Karagiozis. Presented by Theatre of Shadows Charalambous Charalambous
Karagiozis
A shadow puppet show isn't that easy to photograph. The backlight has a tendancy to blow out the captured picture. Happily I was able to manipulate the image to tone the lighting down, giving you a view of the main character - Karagiozis.
I don't know much at all about the tradition of Shadow Theatre, but a google of that name reveals the following:
Karagiozis or Karaghiozis (Greek : Καραγκιόζης), (Turkish: Karagöz [kaɾaˈɟœz]) is a shadow puppet and fictional character of Greek folklore. He is the main character of the traditional Greek shadow puppet theatre, which dates back to the Ottoman era. He is the Hellenized version of the Turkish character Karagöz, and is an important part of Greek cultural heritage and has influenced shadow puppet theatre in many regions.
More Gifts
We shall return to the shadow show in a while. First lets have a bit more of a look around.
Like the Cap St Georges village, there were a decent amount of gift stalls dotted around the Square. It wasn't all food.
