Ancient Images

The original church was built in the ashlar system with stones supplied from the area, and its interior was completly painted. These paintings of holy images were totally destroyed and only a few traces of them reveal their old grandeur. The very few saved paintings - showing Archangel Michael at the north wall and Jesus Christ and the Hierarchs on the east wall of the south nave- are newer and not of the same quality as the original paintings. The holy paintings not existing, the church is nowadays decorated with coloured plates of a later period, built onto the wall and arranged in different formations.

Icons

It is worth noting that a lot of the icons on display have Information Signs letting you know what you are looking at.

The apse of the holy altar is semi-circular and has a round-headed window. The drum of the dome has four round-headed windows which allow light to penetrate the interior of the church/

The wood-carved iconostasis on which the holy icons are placed dates back to the 17th century. The two large portable icons decorating the iconsstasis are also of the same period: the one portrays the Christ saviour (KING OF KINGS) and the other the B.V Mary (LADY OF THE ARCHANGELS)

The twelve figures of the holy Apostles also decorating the iconostasis are of a more recent period.

The crucifixion with the mournful images which crows the top of the iconostasis, as well as the sanctuary door at the base, also belong to the 17th century. At the base of the door we see the holy Prelates Athanassios, Kyrillos, Iacovos Adelphotheuos (Lord's brother) and Hermogenes. Above these images is the Annunciation of our Lady, and at the top of the door is the image of Christ.

As the population of the village grew and the church could not accommodate them all, an addition to the original building was contracted. A south aisle was added, and an internal church-porch was built at the western side. Thus, part of the church's yard which was previously used as a cemetery was enclosed with the church's extension.

Heritage

Today many valuables of the Orthodox ecclesiastical and worshipping tradition are kept within the church of the Virgin Mary: icons, holy Gospels, Books of Monthly Services and other ecclesiastical Books, chalices, large candles, candlesticks, church candelabrum etc. Placed in the holy mass area, they make up the living presence of the Greek Orthodox civilisation, our Heritage.

Final Shot

We shall leave you with a final shot of the exterior of Agios Georgios. If you are visiting Paralimni, you should definitely pop down to the Square for a look. There is plenty to see and a number of nice bars and taverns there as well. It is an altogether slower pace than what you will find in the nearby Protaras and Ayia Napa.

Postcard From Ayia Napa, 2022

Once a year we spend a week in the East of the Island, visiting Ayia Napa, Protaras and the surrounding area. We always enjoy our visit, though it is nice to come back to our beloved Polemi. There is a lot more to the East than sandy beaches and partying. This is a selection of some of the sights we saw.
