Just opposite the Shopping Centre you will find the rather pink building housing Stephanie Rose. This is an amazing place to go to if you like cake and puddings in general. It is also very photogenic, though a sign now prohibits photographs unless you buy something, so do bear that in mind.

If you want an affordable bite to eat then check out Oggi's Pasta next to Stephanie Rose.

You can also grab an ice cream. The alley to the left leads down to Chernobyl Cocktail Bar, if you want to get your bearings.

Old Friend

I've walked back to the Ring Road that runs through Old Town now, just to take a look at this lovely lady. I will cover the alley next to her in a later episode. For now though, we can appreciate the final bow of Aphrodite's Children.

Back In The Day

This is what she used to look like. It was one of the most popular murals in Paphos. All good things come to an end though, and she will eventually be transformed into a boutique hotel.

Incidentally, while Aphrodite has been worshipped for thousands of years in Cyprus, it wasn't until the arrival of the Greeks that she took on her final form. Before she received the Greek name Aphrodite, the primordial deity of Cyprus was worshipped as the Great Mother (Great Goddess) of fertility, while people addressed her with the sacred title “Anassa,” which in the ancient Cypriot language meant “Queen.” The inhabitants of the island did not give her a human form or a personal name, because they believed that her power was omnipresent throughout nature. For this reason, they worshipped her at the sanctuary of Palaipaphos in the form of an aniconic black conical stone made of volcanic rock, an unworked symbol of the earth.

Later, with the arrival of the ancient Greeks, she was gradually incorporated into the Olympian pantheon, acquiring a human form and the name Aphrodite. Her sanctuary at Palaipaphos became recognized as the most important, the most ancient, and the most renowned sanctuary of the Goddess in the entire ancient world.

Ask me how I know that!
