Large Dwellings

What further surprises me is the size of some of the buildings. According to PRIO, there were only about 80 residents at the village's peak. However, the amount of buildings suggest more than that. Or were a lot of them storage places?

Look Up

We mentioned that Gerovasa was on a slope. You can see that clearly here. To our left are overgrown fields and a small cliff, below which the river that orginally carved this valley runs. So we shall head back up towards some more ruins. First we shall check this building out.

Another Fireplace

Inside, you can see the remains of another fireplace, and where rocks have been used as seats around it. I would imagine that at some point, hunters have sheltered in here from the rain.

Mysterious Hole

There is also a hole in the centre of the room. It wasn't for a chimney, and it didn't link to any rooms above it, so perhaps it was used to drop harvest like grain through? That doesn't really make sense though, as you wouldn't have a fireplace in the same room as a grain store, would you?

View From Above

We left the building and climbed back up to the original track near where we parked the car. From above, this is what the building looks like. Somebody has put some tape over this hole. Has there been a cave-in at some point?

Trozena Waterfall

When we visited Trozena last May, we read about a mysterious waterfall. Mysterious because though we could see remnants of an old stream in a picnic area between the village and the church, there was no waterfall at all. But then it rained. A lot. And somebody said there was a waterfall at Trozena. So we went and had a look. If you see one water feature after all the rains, you should make sure it is this one. It is spectacular...

Abandoned Villages - Trozena

If you've driven over the iron bridge which lies just beyond the abandoned village of Gerovasa, near the outskirts of Paphos Forest, then you will also have driven past the abandoned village of Trozena. Unless you are very observant, you won't have noticed it though, as it is barely visible from the road. It is worth taking a detour to explore the ruins, as these photos will hopefully show...
