Agios Charalambos

Published 27th of March, 2018

Let's take a little break from flowers. I know that Cyprus looks lovely in the Spring, and that it abounds with colour and life. But it's time to take a break. With the Polemi Tulip Festival fast approaching, and the knowledge that another road trip from Max is just around the corner too, I think we need to look at something without petals...

Where is Agios Charalambos?

agios_charalambos_01

Agios Charalambos is a funny little church. It is in the middle of nowhere, near Lysos. We only ever seem to find it by accident, but once you have found it, you certainly won't forget it...

The last time I stumbled upon it, I was showing my parents around the countryside near Skarfos Bridge. So that's where I headed first. In the middle of the picture, on the left, you can just make out the water mill above it. I drove past that, and past the yurts, through to Sarama, and then up to Istinjo. Now, instead of turning off the main road there, I continued.

Distant Filousa

I could see Filousa in the distance, and if you aren't in a 4x4, you might want to consider coming from that direction.

Follow The Sign

I did this journey today (27/03/2018), and Cyprus, and a lot of other countries, are currently experiencing very high dust levels as a result of cyclones in Africa. Hence the reason I wanted to blog about something indoors!

Anyway, when you come to this sign, follow it. It points to Agios Charalambos. I remember our first visit. We were exploring the area and were puzzled by some strange tyre tracks we saw. They didn't look like any car or bike we had ever seen, and were much too small for even the daintiest of quads.

Green And Pleasant Land

It may be dusty, but it is still nice and green. The outhouse next to the church is a little toilet. Unfortunately it is locked.

Nice Trees

Despite the dust, Cyprus was still looking pretty.

The Murals of Agios Nikolaos

We've featured a lot of churches in our blogs. This is not surprising, as they are lovely building ornately decorated, and great places for quiet reflection on a hot summer's day. The more modern churches often have fantastic murals which take your breath away. But this is not a new tradition. A visit to the remote church of Agios Nikolaos, near Galataria, will show you that fully immersive church murals have been around for centuries...

Abandoned Villages: Zacharia

Nestled on the side of the Stavros tis Psokas valley, it is easy to miss Zacharia. The Church of Chryseleousa

Wherever you travel in Cyprus, you are never far from a church. Every village has one, and some have several. In our blogs, we've looked at ancient churches, and the highly adorned churches you find in the more populated areas, but we haven't really examined the traditional village church. With that in mind, I am planning a few blogs which will feature such places of worship. So let's start the ball rolling, and travel to Kannivou to visit this lovely church on the hill.

Sinti Monastery

It's time for another guest blog, and this time Max has taken a break from his minerals to show us somewhere a bit more spiritual. Over to you Max... Sinti Monastery is a very important ancient monument and not far away from Paphos, in the beautiful Xeros River Valley. I thought I would take a round trip. In order that people can visit the place all year round (even after a good Winter's rain) in a normal car I took the longer route over the hills where the roads nowadays are all properly surfaced. On the way back you can either take the same road (Winter) or use the short cut along the Xeros river bed which is only 8 km until the next village Nata.

The Enclosure of Agios Neophytos

The other day we set off to find the Enclosure of Agios Neophytos. We had seen a video of it and it looked interesting. A remote monastery in a cliff? That ticks all the right boxes. However, there wasn't much to see when we found the enclosure. We had neglected to pick the key up, and our view through the gate didn't reveal much. Fortunately, the journey to and from the place was so much fun that yet again I find myself having to cherry pick the best pictures rather than pad an article out. So enjoy our journey, and with the map at the end to guide you, why not plan your own route...?

Abandoned Villages - Istinjo

Istinjo is an abandoned little village, with an active farm, just east of Filousa. You won't find it on Google or Bing Maps, unless you opt for satellite view and locate it manually. We have driven past it on numerous times ourselves before we realised it was actually an old village; from the main road it looked more like a slightly ramshackle farm. We only found out it's name when we did our Polis route the other other day. However, on that occasion we decided to stop and have a bit of an explore. Given that we had been following roadsigns to Istinjo since Sarama, it only seemed fair. This is what we found...

Abandoned Villages - Melandra

We first stumbled upon Melandra last Autumn. We were trying to find an interesting route from Pano Panagia to Polis, and having visited a number of isolated villages, decided to venture off-road. The countryside at the time was very brown and arid. So when we revisited the village this May, we hardly recognised the place.
