Routhouni Bridge
Gypsum Cutting
As we mentioned already, there is a lot of gypsum in the area. You can see where some of it has been mined here. This gypsum is water soluable. So if a stream runs through it , it won't provide much resistance. Hence the narrow gorges.
Mind Your Step
From the road, there is virtually a sheer drop to the bottom of the gorge. I'm not climbing down that!
Another Route
So instead, I decided to walk along the side of the field that runs on the other side of the gorge.
Hilltop Ruins?
Soon you will come to an open area like this. In the distance it looks like there are some ruins on the hill. They are in fact just rocks. I walked across this area to come to the edge of the gorge.
Overgrown Bottom
There is an easier descent to the bottom of the gorge here. However, it is completely overgrown down there. Perhaps, after a winter of heavy rain, this may be a bit clearer. Or possibly in late Autumn it will have died down. I'm not going down there now though.
