A Small Chapel

Now this came as a surprise. We certainly weren't expecting to find a chapel here. I wonder how many weddings have taken place here?

Anyway, thanks to the Daily Random Photograph on the forum, I now know this to be the All Saints Chapel, and it really is rather special. Thank you to Al for the link.

This is what the resort has to say about it:

"As far back as 1970, I was drawn to Pissouri Bay for its rugged headland and unspoiled beaches. It was always an ambition of mine to create in this spectacular setting, a resort, which would compliment and respect local Cypriot craftsmanship and culture. Begin to explore the Resort and you will find a small Cypriot seaside town full of unexpected places of interest just waiting to be discovered. The maze of narrow streets, piazzes, cafes and restaurants lead you to a small traditional chapel by the sea. Open its doors and inside the thick stone walls awaits a unique lifetime experience.

Since prehistoric age, man has decorated the walls of caves and temples with icons, scripts and images left to future generations, for continuity and historic reference. This tradition also continued later on throughout the Byzantine era and many of the churches in Cyprus are beautifully decorated with icons and frescoes, celebrating Christianity throughout its two thousand year history.

When the chapel was completed, I asked the painter, John Corbidge, one of the most celebrated local artists, to undertake the painting of the church; a challenge I am glad he accepted.

John was the obvious choice, as I appreciate and admire the youthfulness of his spirit, the clarity of his line as well as his ability to record with accuracy, historical and theological references in his work. His attention to detail, together with his sensitivity as a man and artist, enabled John to introduce new horizons to Cypriot Art. With his fresh, almost naive approach, he gave iconography a completely new dimension. Through his special gift for harmonizing subjects and background, surface and colour, he managed to establish a strong but pleasant atmosphere with skillful use of light and shade.

Masterpieces like this one are rare. Next time you are visiting the Columbia Beach Resort in Pissouri you have to take a seat and enjoy it time and time again in order to fully absorb its beauty and energy."

This chapel is stunning. I'm not going to say anything more about it, just enjoy the pictures on the page.

Cap St Georges

Cap St Georges is a new commercial venture out near the Akamas. It was recently discussed on the Paphos Life forum, as people were concerned about the level of access to the beach area that non-residents would get. So we took our camera down to have a look. This is not a review of Cap St Georges, we didn't try any of the food or drink. This is more of a quick nose so you can see what the area is like.
