Paphos Municipality Bans Scooters on Roads

It was announce today that Paphos Municipality had voted to ban the use of Scooter-type Personal Mobility Devices on the Public Roads of the Municipality of Paphos.

The full announcement on Facebook reads as follows:

Prohibition of Traffic of Scooter-type Personal Mobility Devices on the Public Roads of the Municipality of Paphos

The Municipality of Pafos, in an important decision to enhance safety in public areas, announces the prohibition of the movement of scooter-type personal mobility devices on the public roads of the Municipality, with the exception of approved cycle lanes and cycle lanes, in accordance with the Law on Regulation of Bicycle Traffic and Others Personal Mobility Devices (N. 136(I)/2022). This decision, taken by the plenary of the City Council on October 7, 2024 is aimed at reducing risks and promoting safety in the city of Paphos.

Drivers of scooter personal mobility devices found to be illegal will file a complaint to the Road Administration, which will be responsible for implementing the new rules in public places. At the same time, scooters left unattended on any road or sidewalk will be confiscated by the Municipality of Paphos, and their owners will be burdened with additional sanctions and procedures to recover the devices.

The Municipality of Pafos calls on the citizens to comply with the decision of the Municipal Council and use only the spaces that are explicitly allowed by law. In this way, they will help to protect the road safety in our city.

Does this include all the scooters that are available for rent up and down the municipality? In which case, will they all be removed? And what about the tricycles that are available for hire? I do feel sorry for the refugees who use them to get to and from their place of work. They already abide by the helmet and clothing laws that were introduced. It seems that this unfairly punishes them.
