The government’s proposed revision of the policy on employment of foreigners providing a higher ceiling for those from third countries could be approved on Wednesday during the incumbent administration’s last Cabinet meeting.
Today, the ceiling on employment of foreigners from third countries in Cyprus is up to 30% under certain conditions but the Ministry of Labour has proposed that this goes up to 50%.
The proposed new policy is within efforts to address, amongst other, the problem of the Republic’s labour shortage, Philenews reports.
Trade unions have already requested the withdrawal of the proposal citing possible violations of collective agreements as employers’ organisations are anxiously waiting for approval of the new policy.
Especially in view of human resource shortages observed mainly in the Mediterranean island’s hospitality sector.
Labour Minister Kyriacos Koushios has reportedly refused to inform either side of his final intention which is expected to be made known after Wednesday’s Cabinet meeting.
