Paphos to have best flight schedule in 30 years — optimistic about tourism

Paphos is set to experience its best flight schedule in 30 years, according to Nasos Hadjigeorgiou, the head of the Paphos Regional Board of Tourism (Etap).

In statements made to the Cyprus News Agency (CNA), Hadjigeorgiou noted that from June onwards, more than 250 incoming flights per week are expected at Paphos airport.

He added that international markets have significantly expanded with increasing numbers of individual visitors year by year.

“In terms of Paphos’ prospects for 2023, we are quite confident that we can both attract new visitors and also increase the overall revenue generated from tourism,” Hadjigeorgiou said.

Despite the positive outlook, Hadjigeorgiou acknowledged that Paphos still faces challenges due to its one-dimensional development and standardisation of the product, the ageing of small infrastructures, limited adoption of technology, the strain on the natural environment, and the tendency to alter cultural identity.

He also noted the high operating and investment costs, staff shortages, seasonality, as well as an over-dependence on certain markets.

However, he explained that there are opportunities for Paphos to increase its market share, including the rise of individual travellers, more visitors from certain countries, such as Poland, Israel and Germany, as well as excellent air connections, especially from April to October.

Furthermore, he made reference to the development of specialised products, such as rural and adventure tourism, which could the district to penetrate new segments of the international tourism market.

To ensure the future of tourism in Paphos, Hadjigeorgiou emphasized the need for actions related to digitisation, accessibility, and sustainable development.

“What is necessary for everyone to do is to confront established mindsets and turn words into action,” he said.

Asked to comment on the permanent residents of Cyprus, in the context of domestic tourism, Hadjigeorgiou stated that Paphos is once again favoured as a holiday destination among locals.
