Within the framework of its actions for the protection of the environment and promotion of the marine ecosystem and natural heritage of the region, the Municipality of Akamas will hold a scientific event entitled: “Mediterranean Seal: An iconic species of the Mediterranean – Past, Present and Future”.
The event will take place on Saturday, March 29, 2025, at 7pm, at Pegeia’s Cap St Georges Hotel & Resort.
Keynote speaker will be Dr Panagiotis Dendrinos, President of the Hellenic Society for the Study and Protection of the Mediterranean monk seal (MOm), who will present the latest scientific developments and data concerning the conservation of this iconic marine mammal.
The event will also feature speeches by members of the Mediterranean Seal Monitoring Team in Cyprus – Melina Marcou, Haris Nicolaou and Giannis Ioannou – who will report on the local picture, challenges and prospects for the conservation of the species on the Cypriot coast.
The event will be held under the auspices of Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Dr Maria Panayiotou, who will also offer an address at the event.
The presentation is part of a broader strategy of information, awareness raising and cooperation between Cyprus and Greece for the conservation of the Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus monachus), one of the most endangered species worldwide.
