The Ten Gateways To Paphos

Published 17th of January, 2017

New art installations are being erected at the ten entrances to Paphos Town. The monuments have been designed by a group of Paphos architects and are made of concrete and corten weathering steel. They depict the letter 'P' (π) in Greek, the first letter of Paphos, and so have been crafted in this shape. In this blog we take a look at them as they near completion. In later blogs we will return to see how they eventually turn out. I have numbered each monument because I provide a couple of maps at the end of the article which will help you find them.

1. By the Motorway Roundabout

This one is the biggest of the lot, and stands at the Motorway Roundabout.

From another angle, you can see where the lighting is going to be installed. There has been speculation that, as well as looking like Pi, the monuments are also supposed to symbolise Paphos 2017. I have seen nothing official to support this though.

2. From Debenhams to Geroskipou

Moving down the road, to the Debenhams Roundabout, and turning to Geroskipou, you will find this one. Workmen are still busy with this site at the moment.

3. At The Speed Camera Crossroads

This one seems to be pretty much finished. You can see the lighthouse graphic in the brown portion. Plus there is a rather familiar looking coin image on the other half of the design.

Apparently (I am going on second-hand reports) the Mayor of Paphos had this to say about the pieces:

"The monuments have been designed by a group of Paphos architects and are made of concrete and corten weathering steel.

They depict the letter 'P' (π) in Greek, the first letter of Paphos, and so have been crafted in this shape.

They are all due to be completed by the end of this week.

One of the designers told me that each creation is made of two separate parts, a white concrete column which represents the history and civilisation of Paphos and another crafted in corten weathering steel which marks new beginnings for Paphos, the future and the contemporary surroundings.

The metal structure has the design of Paphos lighthouse cut into it and this is a symbol of the light of Paphos, of new beginnings and the era which we want to come.

The ten monuments are also a welcome ‘gate’ for Paphos and are found along some of the boundaries of Paphos which connect the town with the surrounding areas.

The largest of them all stands at four and a half meters on the roundabout close to the highway to Limassol as this is the main entrance to Paphos.

The monuments will also be lit up from inside using LED lighting; there will also be floor lighting to illuminate it at night-time as well."

The above quote was posted on Bejay Browne's (of Cyprus Mail) facebook feed.

The View From The Side

I have to say the finished monuments look rather nice.
