Mavrokolympos Reservoir Is Empty
A few days ago it was announced that the Mavrokolympos Reservoir had sprung a leak. Attempts to fix it failed, so the only option left was to drain the reservoir completely and repair it properly before the bulk of the winter rains arrived. Today we took the drone there to see how they were getting on...
Reservoir View

I should stress at the start of this article that this was about as close as we were allowed to fly the drone to the reservoir. Owing to a nearby military base there is an exclusion zone that includes the dam end you can see in this shot. Also, if you are thinking of flying your own drone here, don't do it from the main road to Akoursos, as there is a row of pylons between the road and the dam. We drove part way along the track to Adonis Baths and launched the drone from just above the garden centre you pass on the way.
Closer

Fortunately, our drone is quite posh, and comes with handy zoom modes. This is x3.

And this is x7 magnification. This level of zoom is fine for taking pictures, but it makes filming harder as every slight bump is magnified 7 times. There will be a film along tomorrow so you can judge for yourself.
Mavrokolympos Dam

No amount of zoom will show you what is happening on the other side of the dam though, so we will just have to content ourselves with these shots.
The Problem

Paphos hasn't had much luck with water this winter. So far it hasn't rained much, and the desalination plant (our only one) burnt down a few weeks ago. When I first heard about this leak I was suspicious, and suspected sabotage, given the desalination plant's fire. However, the news articles about the issue referred to bad building practices of the Sixties, so at least skullduggery can be ruled out.

eBookCyprus Road Trip 01: the Kathikas - Panagia Loop
Let me take you on a journey around the region of Paphos, Cyprus. Starting at Paphos itself, we travel to Akoursos, then Kathikas, Kritou Terra and Simou. We continue past Lasa and Kannaviou, before taking in the delights of Panagia. Getting a bit more adventurous, we visit the abandoned villages of Statos and Agios Fotios, before passing through Choulou, Letymbou and Polemi, and rejoining the main Paphos - Polis road.
The route is suitable for all types of vehicle, and requires no off-roading. The guide contains about 130 photographs including shots of all the road signs you need to pay attention to, as well as some of the highlights you may experience along the way.
There are also several maps which will help you keep your bearings.
