Gialia Monastery
More Ruins
Every time you come across rocks like this, bear in mind that they might have a more interesting history than you think. There are ruins all over the place, some of them hundreds and thousands of years old. I was intrigued by the inscription though, because it said that this was rediscovered in 1981. However, if you look at Kitchener's map of Cyprus, which he made in the late 19th century, you will see that a church is marked here, labelled "Ayiou Mama Mon". The mill is also shown. So perhaps the church was in use then?
Maybe the monastery was in use in Victorian times? Who knows? Perhaps if they are ever full excavated we will find out for sure, either way.
To The Church
While we were here, we thought we might as well visit Agios Nicolaos as well, to see where the monks were buried. Unfortunately, it is currently closed.

However, my friend had been here before, and was able to supply this picture showing what the church looked like. There has been some serious excavation work performed here.
The Map
Do yourself a favour, and visit this monastery. It is a lovely drive and there is plenty more to do in the area as well. You can continue up the coast afterwards into Pomos. You will definitely like that.

Let me take you on a journey around the region of Paphos, Cyprus. Starting at Paphos itself, we travel to Akoursos, then Kathikas, Kritou Terra and Simou. We continue past Lasa and Kannaviou, before taking in the delights of Panagia. Getting a bit more adventurous, we visit the abandoned villages of Statos and Agios Fotios, before passing through Choulou, Letymbou and Polemi, and rejoining the main Paphos - Polis road.
The route is suitable for all types of vehicle, and requires no off-roading. The guide contains about 130 photographs including shots of all the road signs you need to pay attention to, as well as some of the highlights you may experience along the way.
There are also several maps which will help you keep your bearings.
You can do this journey in a day, or you can break it up into chunks. You can also do it in reverse, to get some completely different views. It is entirely up to you.
