Ayia Napa Aquaduct
The Other Side
I have now gone through the doorway to the other side.
A photograph taken in 1887/8 shows three women filling jars inside the monastery, a fact attesting that the aquaduct was in use at least until that time. Large scale conservation work was undertaken by the Dpeartment of Antiquities in 1996 with the financial support of the Municipality of Ayia Napa. In September 2006 the project was incorporated in the European initiative INTERREG IIA Greece and Cyprus, a fact that lead to the resumption of excavation and conservation works, which continued through 2007. The excavations undertaken by the Department of Antiquities resulted to the recovery of the remaining part of the aquaduct.
The Project is co-financed with 50% by the European Union Fund for Regional Development and 50% by national sources.
Big Wall
Now, from this angle, the aquaduct looks very impressive, and very big.
Going Up
But walk up the steps, and you will be in for a bit of a surprise.
Aquaduct Top
This is the top of the aquaduct. It isn't immediately obvious what is surprising about it.
Towards The Monastery
You can see where it used to continue towards the monastery, but that's not the surprising feature.
