Melandra Poppy Hunt
Church Number 2
I explored this area for the last blog. The ruins to the right were quite interesting. In springtime there is lots of vegetation, and I didn't fancy fighting my way through it to have another look at the church, so you will have to make do with a long range shot.
Towards Zacharia
There is another abandoned village close to Melandra. Zacharia is in this direction. Actually, there is a third one as well. If you take the track from Melandra to Zacharia and keep going, you loop around to Istinjo. So if you like exploring abandoned villages, you have three to explore here.
If you look closely at this picture, you will see a white blob in the centre foreground, just above the road. This is actually a headstone. There is a tiny Turkish Cypriot cemetary there.
The Tiny Turkish Cypriot Cemetary
The white blob is behind this tree in the front. You can see other tombs in the foreground too.
Let's Explore The Churches
As the church and mosque aren't surrounded by waist-high vegetation, lets take a look at them. The first thing to note is that the mosque has lost its minaret. When we blogged about the village in 2017, the minaret was intact.
This begs the question, did the minaret fall, or was it pushed?
Inside The Church
The church interior is fairly plain, but pleasant enough.
