Evretou Dam

Ever since we explored the abandoned villages of Evretou and Trimithousa, we have been meaning to return and have a look at the rest of the reservoir. A chance wrong turn gave us just the opportunity we needed, so off we went. It took us a few visits to get the full picture of the reservoir, but we saw some lovely scenery along the way...

Yes, it took us a while to find the right route, and it is a bit overgrown in places.

The oddest thing for me though was that toy car. I must have nearly stepped on it but didn't notice it until I was preparing the pictures for the blog.

We live in Zygi and are relatively new arrivals. Do we ever get water rationing here? Where does Zygi get its water from (like from which dam)?

If you look at this site, the biggest damn in Cyprus is Kouris and situated just north of Limmasol.
Currently at 7.9% capacity. If it gets below 5% the water is no longer usable.

At least a question NOT about politics If you study this link you should know everything about water supply in your area. It is also interconnected with desalination plants, unlike Paphos district unfortunately.

The east tends to get less rain than the west.
In winter 2012 the second biggest damn Asprokremos Paphos was overflowing. Kouris was about 30%.
They did have a desalination plant in Paphos, but as it was never used I believe that they dismantled it. If that was the case it was a bit short sighted of the water authority.

I remember the water cuts. It just meant that the Cypriot ladies had to wait until later in the day to hose down the outside patios and roads..

Although there are a number of boreholes in the Paphos area, the source of water for these is the Aquifers. These are deposits of water mainly situated very deep within the ground. However, the water there is not infinite and if they are depleted too much, ie over pumped, the danger is that salt water will seep into them. This turns water brackish and undrinkable.So these days the Govt is monitoring them and no doubt will try to limit how much water can be used to avoid this happening. If the Aquifers go, then
Paphos would be in a bad way until a new desalination plant can be built.

Remember it well, in the news at the time, police were fining expats for wasting water, but our police neighbours were washing the roads, we pretended to take a picture of this happening and the police neighbours knocked on our door and stated that they are the police.
Nice of them to remind us.
