Agia Mavri Chapel, worth a visit...

Post by cyprusmax47 »

Early in this Summer I was visiting Agia Mavri Chapel, near Pera Pedi and Koilani, as I was informed from some restoration experts that the chapel is reopened after it was flooded last winter. One can do the tour as a round trip starting from Paphos and using the nice road in the Dhiarizos valley,
climbing slowly higher to villages like Gerovasa and further to Malia, Vouni from where it is only another 7 km. The chapel is right on the road which continues later towards Pera Pedi (E803) From Pera Pedi you can drive back home via Mandria, Agios Nikolaos and you are back in the Dhiarizos valley.

and here we are, one can see water appearing in the front which is holy water from a spring behind the church..

this is the other side of the chapel surrounded by huge ancient trees, one plane tree is >800 years old and 38m high.

this sign outside the place is handy and explains some of the history and important is that the frescoes are from two periods 12th and 15th century

I was lucky that the priest was there when I visited and could show me the older frescoes from 12th century right behind the Altar where is normally locked. Here the entrance with the wall paintings of Ayia Mavri and Timotheos already in the background.

they gave the place the name

the view towards the altar

and this is the area where the holy water comes into the church and the sound of running water gives it a real special atmosphere.

great work of art at the dome

I like that fresco showing the architecture of that time with a roof garden

now behind of the altar the oldest part of the chapel

Great photos, Max - did you find Agia Mavri winery when you were there?
It's at Koilani - it's the winery we had our friends bring back the Xinesteri wine from in their container because we can't find it online in UK, no matter what other people might tell us.

Glad, you like my pics. As the winery is not on the E803 (Pera Pedi-Vouni) but on the road to Koilani which I never visited yet, I missed it. Personally I am very happy with the Xinistery from Tsangarides Winery, locally produced at Lemona which is only 10 km from where I live and is available at my favourite fish tavern as well.
I wonder how much transport costs they would charge you if you order direct from Koilani...?
For example costs with DHL from Germany to any EU country would cost 22 Euro for 10 kg (6 bottles). I don't know what the costs from Cyprus will be though. https://www.dhl.de/en/privatkunden/prei ... ional.html

A lot more than we paid our friends for the bottles they brought back 😉

At over 3.5euros per bottle for carriage, that’s a steep premium. I’d argue only worthwhile for something a lot more expensive....

On a side note, we too really like the Tsangarides Xynisteri and invariably choose it in a restaurant.
The priest was ever so friendly and opened the altar screen for me and invited me to go behind for photos. He also gave me a nice booklet with photos from the oldest frescoes of the church, refusing to take any money of me.

Did you notice that the small bottles from Tsangarides Xinisteri are tasting even better than the large ones ?(already 2018!)
