Well he would wouldn't he. If he is found guilty then it's mandatory life imprisonment, so he may as well plead not guilty.

It did until recently, when they introduced a parole system. Assuming someone didn't get parole, then they would indeed be in for life. There was a chap recently who got parole after serving 31 years for murder.
