Night Sky

Post by PaphosAL »

As I write, at twilight 18:44 GMT, I see a beautiful skinny New Moon, with Venus below it to the right.

Possibly too late for you folks in Cyprus to see this glorious sight right now, over there. But watch out for it after sunset tomorrow (20 March) when the New Moon and Venus will be much closer together in the evening sky in the West.

Possible photographic opportunties for PL members (Max, Lincoln, Jim, Dom, ét al..) ???

AL- :D

Spotted the new moon earlier but cannot see even one star now. Think we have got dust in the air. Earlier we watched the sun go down and it disappeared from view well short of the horizon.

Not at the moment AL, we've got a waxing moon in its first stage & not due to become a full moon until the 31st!

But Al talked about a skinny New Moon, not about the Full Moon.

Saw it last night exactly as Al described. Venus, od course, is a planet not a star!! At first I thought it was a plane coming in to land becausecit was twinkling so much.

Another glorious sight in the western sky last night at around 21:00 GMT was the constellation of Orion, though not as bright here in UK as it was when I last viewed it in Paphos 3 weeks ago...

Now, if you have binoculars or telescope, let's take a closer look at Orion. yes? First, visually line up on the three horizontal stars in the centre of Orion that form the 'belt'. Just below that are a fuzzy vertical alignment of stars that form Orion's 'sword'. This is the amazing area you need to zoom in on with binoculars or telescope!

You'll see gobsmacking coloured clouds of nebulous gas (including the Horse Head Nebula) where new stars are being born every day! Awesome sight, believe me...

Isn't God's creation, the Universe, marvelous?
