Good Morning everybody to another glorious Winter's day..pic

Post by cyprusmax47 »

Good Morning everybody to a very pleasant Winter's day with expected temperatures rising to 22-23 c on the Island. I believe a lot of British or German people are getting gealous now with the snowy weather there... but it is one of the reasons I decided to live here in Cyprus.

The altitude of the sun is nearly on their lowest position now, which I always check counting the windmills from left to right and the nighttime is already on the decline since yesterday.

I already recognized the last days, that it is already good daylight when the lights on my "Christmas tree" in the garden come on (on timer) when I come back with my dog, ca 5 pm.
On the 21 of Dec we will gain already 5 min, as the sun goes down 4.43 instead 4.38 last week...

Quite right Max about us being jealous. Unfortunately we have things to tie up legally here in the UK otherwise we would be in Cyprus. Yesterday I went out on my bike and it was only 2c and the shallow sea water had frozen as the tide went out.

On the subject of the winter solstice, the shortest day this year is, as Trev states, Dec 21st.
The December solstice is on either December 20, 21, 22 or 23.

The North Pole is tilted furthest from the Sun.

It is the winter solstice in the Northern Hemisphere, where it is the shortest day of the year.

In the Southern Hemisphere, it is the summer solstice and the longest day of the year.

December Solstice in Colwyn Bay, Wales, United Kingdom is on
Thursday, 21 December 2017, 16:28 GMT (Change city)

December Solstice in Universal Coordinated Time is on

Surely you mean that you will be losing 5 mins of daylight by the Winter Solstice on 21 Dec, (compared to last week), not gaining, Max?

21 December is indeed the shortest day in the northern hemisphere. After that, daylight hours increase by 4 minutes a day, as the Sun begins it's inexorable climb back up into higher altitudes each day...

I am not an expert for Winter Solstice. What I mentioned was that already in the evenings is more daylight from now as the sun is setting later.
It is not the 21.12. in Cyprus. On the other hand in the morning sunrise is much later than on the 21.12.!! The sun is lowest on the horizon on 15.1.!!
As I said before I always count the windmills from left to right when this happens. One can follow this p.e. on Accu Weather section Sunset/Sunrise
https://www.accuweather.com/en/cy/papho ... ast/124968

12.12. Sunrise 6.48 am
Sunset 4.40 pm
Duration 9.52 h

21.12. SR 6.54
SS 4.43
D 9.49

31.12. SR 6.57
SS 4.49
D 9.52

10.1. SR 6.58
SS 4.57

15.1. SR 6.58
SS 5.02
D 10.04

17.1. SR 6.57

I'm not arguing but our daylight hours change from day to day in accordance with the weather.....
A nice day means it's stays lighter a bit later, a crappy day means it goes dark a bit earlier.

Yes, it gets lighter usually for a bit longer - but from my experience of travelling to and from work in Cyprus for 12yrs, that's not until sometime in January. From November onwards it's generally dark by 6pm and then if I managed to leave work no later than 17:05hrs during December, I could generally get home from Limassol town centre to Ypsonas before it went fully dark.
