Hype in PafosPress about natural pools - my own pics...

Post by cyprusmax47 »

There is for a sudden such a hype in the Press about our natural pools around Paphos.

https://pafospress.com/%cf%80%ce%b1%cf% ... %80%ce%b9/

So I thought I present some of my own pics from my Gallery... ;)

This is a "real" pool with no big opening to the sea but maybe from somewhere fresh sea water comes into this pond..

Image

Opposite towards Paphos...
Image

Nice rock formations..
Image

A more open "pool" with large opening to the Sea
Image

But quite long though (nearly Olympic)
Image

And even tourists arriving :) Oh I forgot it is mid August but can happen only here.. That's why I love Cyprus.
Image

Finally the reason I came to this place... but this will be a different topic in the future ;)

Beautiful photos once again thanks, Max!

Constructive input: Perhaps avail yourself of Dom's useful PL feature, whereby you can add a descriptive text lable to each photo you upload?

In this way, you can tell your avid audience a bit more about each shot, without keeping us all guessing, LOL!

Cheers- AL :)

One thing you don't seem to get in Cyprus is rock pools teeming with life.

Tourists will have problems to find them and many Cypriots don't know their own country and go always to places they are used to go, since generations and then with the whole family...

Think Dominic means aquatic life. Probably because the water would get too hot in these pools, and too salty as the water evaporates in the heat.
Yes, in places like Cornwall we would go rock pooling, and spend the afternoon with a net catching crabs, shrimps and small fish. They would get released at the end of the day, so I guess they didn't mind too much.

Obviously I misunderstood that you was talking about aquatic life. There is not much in Cyprus waters as it is too far away from the Atlantic where only through the Strait of Gibraltar comes fresh oxygen-containing water. Another reason that fresh fish is so expensive here. On the other hand I found surprisingly a lot of little tiny ponds in Akamas waters with quite a lot of aquatic life near Avacas river.

I take it you are talking about the outflow from the Avakas Gorge river here, Max? A few clicks up NW from Agios Georgios fishing harbour?

Cheers- AL :?

It is near the Aspros pre-neolitic site (ca 12000 BP) which reaches from the top cliff of the Aspros river down to the sea shore and further. Main findings of tools where found in 100 m distance from shore, 10 m deep in the water. As there was a cold snap ca 12500 years ago the sea level was ca 70 meters lower, so the main site was where is today the sea. Anyhow this leads to much in a different direction and topic, where I believe it is not much interest from our members, but if you go on BING maps, satellite image, you can see where I mean: From the White River Fish Tavern" towards the beach and further to the North...(image is like Street view..)

Yes, I have it pinpointed now Max, thanks. Wish I had €10 for every time I've driven past the White River Taverna!

I bet the quaint old hand-painted sign is still there, pointing left "To the Sunday Beach"

Cheers- AL :D

Just for you Alan: The pre-Neolitic excavation site which goes 100 m into the sea....

We love that little beach. However, the person who maintains the sunbeds and carpark needs some lessons in public relations. There have been numerous reports of the man on the scooter (not the same as the old man on the scooter who used to do it) locking people in and being very abusive to people.

Here's a shot I took in June 2003 of the same beach, Max. As you can see, I'm up on the sharp right bend, where the road then dives steeply down to the hairpin bend across the Aspros, then climbs up past the White River Tavern.

No doubt it's been tarmacced or concreted by now, but in those days, the hairpin is where the tarmac ended and the loose surface track began. Taverna staff used to hose down the section of track climbing uphill past their restaurant regularly, to dampen down the dust kicked up by passing motors and stop it wafting into their premises.

The track down " << To the Sunday Beach" was on the left, just after the hairpin, just before the taverna. So the quaint sign I referred to was also on the left, opposite side of the road to the tavern, leading you down alongside the Aspros bed.

I never knew that this particular location was once an ancient Neolithic settlement, crikey! We learn something new here every day on PL!

Cheers- AL :D

Is this beach operated by the nearby White River Taverna, Dominic, or from afar? Apart from sunbeds and brollies, there were no other beach facilities that I recall seeing, such as loos, shower, bar etc. Maybe things have improved somewhat over the last decade?

As you can see in my photo, grazing goats are quite close by. There can't be many beaches around Paphos that have that feature, LOL!

The abusive guy on the scooter running things. Is he a local Cypriot, or would he perchance be a dreadlocked caribbean Brit who also works in one of the noisier bars in Bar Street at night?

There is a loo there of sorts, which is a flimsy wooden shack above a big hole in the ground. The guy running it is Cypriot, and the same company run that, the ice cream shop on top of the hill, and the tavern on the bend.

I don't know if Grumpy Scooter Guy is the new owner, but I have seen him in the ice cream kiosk as well as being grumpy on his scooter. Before last year, there was a much friendlier scooter guy.
