Paphos Archaeological Park

When relatives visited us a few weeks ago, we took them to some of the local tourist must-see sites. A definite highpoint was the visit to the Archaeological Park. We were especially lucky because it was spring time and all the wild flowers were in bloom.

We went some years ago in April 2014 and were very surprised by how much it had grown since our previous visit to the Archaeological Park in 1992....

All I can recall of the day is that it was extremely hot and we all came back a bit sunburned even though we left the hotel well before lunchtime! Very little signs of those colourful wild flowers in the photos supplied by Dominic Most likely it was not such a wet Winter preceding the Spring of 2014.

Agree that the park is lovely. On a similar subject We went on a cruise a couple of weeks ago and the first place we visited was the site of Ephesus after we docked at Kusadassi. Previously I've never been that 'into' these paces but was blown away by it. It made the Acropolis and Parthenon that we visited the next day in Athens - somewhere I've always wanted to visit, look like a garden feature by comparison. I struggle to upload photos on here for some reason, but have look on google and you'll see what I mean. And they reckon they've only uncovered about 5% of the site! Amazing.

In the 90s I did some travelling in SE Asia. The highpoint was definitely Cambodia and Angkor Wat. My brother visited there last year and Siam Reap now sounds unrecognisable to what it was like back then. Ta Prohm was my favourite, which is the city with all the trees growing all over it.

Fortunately I have plenty to explore in Cyprus!

For people really interested in the mosaics of Paphos and to understand them more, as they are also a documentation of life in this period of time, then this website to read is a must. http://romeartlover.tripod.com/Paphos2.html
I suggest to study this link before you visit this really interesting ancient site then one can concentrate on the most important treasures...as the place is so huge and easy to miss out the best one's specially when it get's Summer and boiling hot. Very interesting the mosaic called " the Birth of Dionysos" which easily could be the Nativity of Jesus. (5th mosaic if you scroll down)
