The Grey Cliffs of Paphos - Part 1
The Grey Cliffs of Paphos - Part 1
A ridge of cliffs bisects the city of Paphos. Below it, Universal and Kato Paphos stretch down to the sea. Above it, the Old Town and business areas form the bulk of the rest of the city. But what of the cliffs themselves? For years I have been meaning to explore them properly, and recently I finally got around to it. I've split the article into three parts, and we shall begin above the church we featured in our last blog.

I don’t post often, but really enjoyed this blog, I often pass these cliffs, and wondered what lay below them.
Thanks Dominic, much appreciated.
Whilst I don’t post often I follow your blogs to areas I otherwise would not see, with great interest.

Interesting how this area looks now. Here a screenshot from Bing map ca 10 years ago where one can see the little river as well...

Interesting picture Max. I see that church is at least 10 years old then.

How do you get to view Bing maps from 10 years ago?

Re: The Grey Cliffs of Paphos - Part 1
. I was actually looking for an Archaeological Dig Site that had been mentioned on our forum.
The dig is going on behind the pearl park complex, work has had to stop on the expansion of pearl Park because of the dig, their are two building blocks (paphos heights) on the top of the ridge one behind the other. I also mentioned about (in another post, fish pond). how selfish of aristo to drain the pond and just let the fish die.

Re: The Grey Cliffs of Paphos - Part 1
Took me ages to find out. This image of the church is perhaps even older than 10 years...
Go on Bing map and click where it says road and choose "Areal". Then you enlarge to the area you want until maximum. After that, right mouse click and select: Bird's eye view. This you can enlarge another step. However many areas don't have Bird's eye view...
Here a example from Iasis Hospital how it looked perhaps more than 10 years ago. Max

Ta, I had seen the birds eye view option but just assumed it meant the satellite picture. Weird how that works.

Re: The Grey Cliffs of Paphos - Part 1
I use Birds eye view a lot both in Cyprus and in the UK.
But Max, I am interested to know why you think the view is 10 years old ?? I don't think it IS that old because in other Paphos areas the Mall is in the viewer.
By the way, in most of the 'Birds eye Views', you can swivel the picture around 360 degrees, but in 90 degree sections

Re: The Grey Cliffs of Paphos - Part 1
I know both places where I posted images ( around the church and around Iasis Hospital) very well, as it happened that I stayed 1 year in one of the blocks right above the cliff in 2009 and it looked exactly like on the image. Further I had a customer in 2009 who lived in an apartment just above the little church. From his balcony we had the view down to the church and it looked like on the image one can see on the Bird's eye view....
However, other images from Bing are recently updated!
I hope you are happy now with this clarification.

Is the area above the cliffs called Exo Vrisi or am I mistaken?

Exo Vrisi is the area West of the little church towards Muse restaurant...LouiseCastricum wrote: ↑Fri Oct 29, 2021 10:57 pm Is the area above the cliffs called Exo Vrisi or am I mistaken?

Re: The Grey Cliffs of Paphos - Part 1
I was going to mention that Exo Vrisi name in the description but it made it quite wordy so I just said Universal. The area on the map is quite small. According to the old Victorian map it used to be the cemetary.

Re: The Grey Cliffs of Paphos - Part 1
Well, if I translate the name Exo Vrisi (with my poor Greek language knowledge) than it means: Away from the spring. (Exo=outside, Vrisi=Spring)
So the old people settled more likely westwards of the little river and called the place Exo Vrisi. By the way: the cemetary is still on the edge of Exo Vrisi.

Yes but on the older map it was further over to the right.
