Panagia Odigitria

Post by Dominic »

High above Marathounta there is a church which overlooks the city of Paphos and the surrounding area. We have often used it as a landmark, and it has featured from a distance in several of our articles. So we thought it about time that we visited Panagia Odigitria to get a close-up view, and to enjoy the stunning scenery.

Dominic,
Like you, we have seen and admired the church from afar for a number of years. After watching your recent movie of the drive to the church, would you recommend we attempt it in a saloon car, or not?

Visited this one some time back in a VW Passat estate.

Taking it slowly, we made it along the maze of roads away from the main road. Car ‘ bottomed out’ a few times. The road is really rough. I’d say you need to take account of the age of your car and how much you love it.

Wouldn’t do it in a new Merc.

Also, and this is a few years back, there was a distinct lack of signage after we’d turned off the main road. More important on the return trip

Fabulous views though

CL summed it up. If you take a wrong turn on the way back you will end up in the Ezousa Valley, possibly after a bit of a plummet. So make sure you are comfortable reversing up a hill. This is exactly what I did after filming this, and I know the area quite well.
