Yes we were flashed and didn't know it until we returned to the North the following year,they let us know at the border but weren't too bothered! In fact I think we made two or three trips back and forth before they thought we may as well pay the fine! It was only about 35 euros from memory

Agree with WHL in that the fines are not wiped from the records.
However, the authorities on the island used not to pursue offenders who were visiting the island from overseas using hire cars. Then they brought in a new system in that the hire companies were responsible for paying the fine.
Not hired a car in recent years but last time an amount was withheld until three weeks after the car was returned just in case there were any outstanding traffic fines and duly deposited in the account at the end of that period.

Back in the UK , I have had serveral rental companys remove money off my card, for speeding fines. after ive come back to Cyprus, im guesing it works the other way also , the illigal north cant do this, hence they wait until you re,enter again, then ask for the money.

It's not that simple for me because in German the answer would have to be different ("doch") to express the same thing.
