Can anyone help or offer advice

Post by Cappielow1 »

Approximately 4 years ago we visited Kyrenia using a hire car, on the road in I'm pretty sure I was flashed by a speed camera (forgetting it was KPH and not MPH).

As I understand things, because Northern Cyprus is not recognised internationally, any misdemeanor is logged against your passport and should you attempt to cross the border again, or attempt to enter mainland Turkey, this will flag up and you'll be required to pay any fine plus accumulated surcharges.

I only ask as my son has booked a holiday in Turkey for July 2022 and wants us to go with them.

I wouldn't like to arrive in Turkey to find I have to pay an exorbitant fine before I'm allowed entry, or worse still, before I'm allowed to come home.

Midnight Express springs to mind πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

Anyone have any previous experience or knowledge of a similar situation?

It seems that you haven't been reading posts on this forum while you are away,
Unfortunately since the start of the pandemic here last year when the border crossing points were largely closed to most people, they have remained shut. In the recent elections held in the north a new leader was elected. He has shown himself to have very different ideas for the future of the north. Politics play a big part which I won't mention.
So, you will have to forget going to the north, as we all have for at least the next few years.

Sorry to ruin your hopes. But Tourists have to decide whether they want to visit the north or the south of Cyprus.

I think the risk of a speeding fine is the last of your worrys if you intend to holiday in Turkey

I am more than aware the borders have been closed during the pandemic.
If you read my post again, you will see my enquiry centres around the possibility of traveling to mainland Turkey.
Since Turkey are the only country that recognises the existence of Northern Cyprus in its own right, it is therefore reasonable to assume that any rules relating to the north would also relate to mainland Turkey.
I have been to the north several times and would be more than content not to repeat these visits again.
However, if possible, I would like to travel with my family as invited by them.

In all honesty, I can never understand people who join forums such as this if their intention is simply to be obtuse and make unhelpful and controversial replies.

To answer your question, if you have been zapped speeding, then yes the next time you go over to the occupied north, you will have to pay what ever fine they have given you, is it recorded in Turkey I doubt it very much, they have enough Sh*t going on over there trying to keep seventy odd million Turks in order, to worry about a speeding fine issued in the north of Cyprus.

As I read it you were not stopped and issued with a ticket so surely they would not have your name unless your car hire company gave it to them. Have you checked with the car hire company whether they had received the penalty notice.

They dont have to issue you a ticket, they will have your details on the insurance you took out to drive over there, I know of two people who have been flagged up, and they have had to cough up, not only the fine but delayed payment charges, they tried to argue, but if you dispute the fact you were speeding, you then have to go to Nicosia, where they will show you prove/data photos etc.

As I understand it, when you cross the border, they link the VRM to your passport and therefore have your details.

While I'm unlikely to recross from South to North in the future, if I did so and was asked to pay a fine (which I'd have no problem doing, it's the surcharges I'd object to) I could always turn around and just not cross.
However, if this was linked to my passport and I arrived at an airport and was denied entry I'd have little choice other than to pay.
Hence my post wondering if anyone had previous experience or knowledge.

Sorry if I upset you, which was quite unintended. I misread your post as I thought that you would be landing here in the south and then going to the north, as many tourists have done.
We've never had a speeding fine while in the north, but I know of people who have. What others have told you about the authorities there logging your speeding fine, and then demanding payment should you return, is true also.
Not sure where you are now, but I expect that you know that Turkey has a large number of covid cases at present.
Let's hope that the Pandemic will be stopped when every country is able to vaccinate their citizens to get herd immunity.

If you have renewed your passport since you last visited the north, then you may not flag up on their system as they will have your old passport number.

No problems, upset no, slightly annoyed yes.
Thanks for your info.

This confirms what I suspected and I won't be going going to Turkey in the future, been there and wasn't overly impressed.
Although I'm always keen to see my grandchildren enjoying themselves and may have gone with them.
We'll just have to wait untill we can all get back to Cyprus.

Is the closing of the border crossings not merely because of covid?

When you hire a car you give your Passport and Driving Licence details to the hire company.

If you had been speeding the authorities would have either sent the information to the hire company which would have forwarded it to you or,
more than likely as it was a hire car and it was four years ago, decided not to pursue the fine.

From my travelling experiences between North Cyprus and Turkey for immigration, residency, custom duties etc. each country has a separate entity.

The fines are not wiped from their records, ive found a couple of examples on google
