Chris Cool has just serviced the A/C units in our villa in Tala.
Our tenants have since reported that one is working intermittently, so he has been back and has informed us that the 'Electronic Module' is broken and that we would be best replacing the WHOLE unit at a cost of €500!
It is a Sharp 'Eco inverter' AY-X13BE installed in about 2001
The tenants have said that they are in no hurry to get it done
Approaching 16 year old unit, with dated technology and no doubt Ozone depleting refrigerant which is no longer in use?
Time for Steptoe to be called.
I have just been through the process of replacing my last 2 older units installed in 2004 with new Haier units which use 75% less electricity than the ones they replaced.
I would second that "second opinion" idea! It may well transpire that this A/C unit is currently in economical 'dehumidify mode' where its operation would appear to be sporadic... But it does its job and keeps humidity levels inside within comfortable levels.
Most problems like this normally emanate from the occupier not reading the damned A/C manual instructions properly! It probably just needs a PROPER service by someone who knows what they're doing, rather than a jack of all trades who wants to sell you a new eazyfit pre-gassed unit...
Sorry JB but definitely time to replace. Dependant on the size you require but I don' t think €500 is a bad price although I would definitely get a few quotes. Beware though that some shops are still trying to get rid of the old style units - don't be tempted as false economy.
I agree with bromerzz & Poppy, A/c units of that age are no longer supported legally & need to be replaced! New units are quieter, cheaper to run & more environmentally friendly but as Poppy says be careful with your choice of supplier!

Andrea 99675329. he has a shop near the fire station. he came out to our old unit and tried to fix it. it broke down but he didn't charge for the second visit. our unit was old and shot, so he supplied us with a new one. very tidy workmanship and i believe he is honest. if he can fix he will try, but he will give you his opinion. we had another unit where the capacitor went and he fixed that for not very much money.
