Morning Lloyd. If you look on the other side of the licence on the right hand side is what looks like a possible key to what the items on the other side are?? It's in Greek though and my Greek is not up to the translation. Also, not too sure as I have mislaid mine but item 5 looks suspiciously like an ARC number (alien card) , but could be totally wrong on all counts!

Lloyd, based in mine I think 4a is date of issue, 4b, expiry, 4c says road transport department, 5 ties in with ARC numbering on my MEU doc, 9 ties in the vehicle categories on the reverse, so I think therefore that 4d must be the licence number

It looks like it is 5 .

Standard data field labelling

To help users of different languages to understand what each of the data fields on the licence contains, they are labelled with a number. A legend is usually supplied on the reverse of the card in the issuing authority's language.

1.surname
2.given name
3.date of birth, place of birth
4.a) date of issue, b) date of expiry, c) issuing authority, d) personal number
5.licence number
photograph of holder
7.signature of holder

On the back of the licence is a key. It says No.5 is your licence number (in Greek αριθμός άδειας). This is also your ID or ARC number but is preceded with a 1/. This is not too different to the UK licence which uses a combination of your name and date of birth (if I remember correctly).

So is the new number in section 4d ?

Is section 5 still the same ?

Sorry to drag this up again but for anyone who is interested, I have just returned from using a hire car in the UK and they used and confirmed that no. 5 was my licence number. This is my ID preceded by a 1/.

If you have Cyprus driving license , you only need to look at the reverse , there is a key written in Greek that tells you what each item is . And number 5 is the licence number , this was pointed out by Jeanne a while back .

Why would your licence number change , makes no sense at all .

The whole point of having a licence number is so the authority’s can keep a track on you .

And I think Cyprus have done a common sense thing using your I.D number as a licence number .

Poor Lincoln and happy can not accept facts .

So far, 25 posts on this subject, which is banal.

So far, 3 posts on 'Traffic offences in May topped 25,000'

Have we lost our sense of proportion, argy-bargying on banalities, while we drive like idiots?

I have looked at other official docs that have my ID ref & can confirm that '5' is your Cyprus ID which means 4d is the licence number.

I had to show my driving licence at a UK police station last week and the officer told me that number 5 is the driving licence number on all driving licences.

Just to clarify - perhaps posters are not making it clear which driving licence and the country of issue.
1. On my last UK (EU format) Photo Driving Licence Para 5 is indeed the UK Driver Licence number.
2. On my current CY (EU format) Photo Driving Licence Para 5 is my National ID or Alien registration number, and Para 4.d is the driving licence number.

I kept a photocopy of my last UK issued driving licence!

I’ve had a CY drivers license for some years, as it was required before Cyprus joined the EU and have used it several times to hire cars in the UK. It was accepted without any hesitation, even the scruffy old piece of paper which was the original license which was issued by the transport dept with my photo stapled to it! Then I was issued with the smart new plastic card. More recently.. I probably used no 5 which was actually my ARC no... which appears on all official documents including my now obsolete , but still useful ID card. But it was accepted.
