Too many forum sections?

Post by geoffreys »

Whereas I fully appreciate the reasoning behind having so many sections to the forum now cf. to what it had when it first started out,
I wonder if this isn't spreading things too thinly?
Bit like TV channels - there are now so many to watch in practice we all tend to keep to our favourite few.
For myself I just don't have the time or inclination to read all these sections; if I lose out as a result too bad.
What do YOU think? Chat about it ( )

I never thought of that.

Do you use the blogs?

I use the New Posts option to which means I have no idea which section a thread is in....

Geoff, I don't really read the Blog posts because I don't like to be pointed to a different location without knowing what it is I'm being sent to.... I prefer to have a snippet of info, a quote or preview of the article first.

Totally agree with you about the Blog posts.
I don't read them either.

If someone has commented after the link and the conversation then interests me, I sometimes click through the link.

Just my personal preference really, rather than not being interested in general.

With regards to the number of sections, I tend to agree. This is why I made the announcement about picture and video posts. Besides, guest viewers of the site, of which there are many, judging by the logs, do not have the option of viewing unread posts. I myself use the unread posts function, as it makes forum navigation redundant, but for newcomers, a whole host of forums can be a bit daunting.

One possibility I though, would be to provide the "New Posts" view above the General Discussions forum. That might work.

With regards to the blog post, their main access point is from the main site. The intention of the threads appearing in the forum was to provide an easy means for people to chat about the blog articles. As such, providing a snippet was a bit redundant, as the viewer of the thread would have already come from the blog article, if you see what I mean.

However, I take your point about the snippet. It would be useful. I am in the process of automating those blog posts (and the news ones) as they are a pain manually. You have to post the article, then post the forum link, then update the article to refer to the forum post you just created. An automated system could easily insert the first paragraph, like the thumbnails on the main site.

And thank you for raising this as a point of discussion. Ultimately, the forum is here for it's members, and it's members opinions on it's layout and functionality are valid and appreciated.

If you use the Active Topics option you get all the latest posts and a pointer to which section they are in. :D

Active Topics and New Posts are something completely different to each other.... I use "new" posts exactly for that reason. I'm not interested if it's "active" or not, neither am I bothered about which particular section of the forum it's in because people post wherever they feel like in any event. :|

We're all different - and we each use the forum in different ways. That's what makes people "interesting" ;-)

Well you can't please all of the people all of the time, you might please some of the people some of the time.
The danger to avoid is pleasing none of the people all of the time!
Get my drift?
We are lucky to have a forum owner (Dominic) who is prepared to listen to suggestions because he wants to improve things all the time.
Intelligent discussion is required and when I started this thread it was with that very much in mind.
I was trying as a forum member to be constructive, please take it that way and if you can expand on it.

Right, I have made a few changes:

The following sections have been deleted:
Site Issues
- no longer required as site now stable. People with problems or suggestions should now just post in the general section.
Debate and Discuss
- religeon and philosophy never used, so I moved the politics and pit to the Social section and deleted this section.

The following forums have been deleted:
Paphos Life Announcements - I will just post them in the general section now.
Learning Greek
Meanwhile in the Uk
Forums and Blogs forum
Religion
Philosophy

The following forums have been merged.
Computers Forum and TV / Broadband forums have been merged to a new TECHNOLOGY forum
Jobs Wanted Jobs Offered merged to Jobs
Properties for Rent / Properties for Sale merged to a new PROPERTIES OFFERED forum
Properties Wanted / Rental Properties Wanted merged to a new PROPERTIES WANTED forum

So there are now 14 less forums than there used to be, and two less sections.

My, my Dominic - you've been busy today.....
I thought you were supposed to be off somewhere flying kites or crashing a drone ;-)

Well done you, for listening to your members and being amenable to their comments and wishes. That makes for a very pleasant change indeed.

Onwards and upwards!
