Impressive Paphos rivers

Post by Ams »

I took a sneaky long lunch break from work today to have a look at our rivers after all that rain (according to the Cyprus Mail it was the most rain in 24 hours in 30 years).

Xeros river (at the Nata-Choletria bridge - after bursting its banks)

I went to Aga Vavara last Sunday and crossed that section of the Ezousa, though I couldn't get much further down the track because of the mud …………… wouldn't like to try it now!

I know, right? I took a photo of the Diarizos river from the same place on Sunday and although there was plenty of water it was nothing like this!

I was pleased I managed to go out and see them yesterday, as it really was something.

If I wasn't working today I'd do a road trip to see Kefalos and even maybe up to Xyliatos dam, the other side of Troodos, to see that impressive waterfall I've seen a few videos of. I'd imagine it will all have calmed down by Saturday.

I saw a video of Chantara falls today - it looks nothing like it does in summer! Wow.

Unlike at Xeros river, there was no police tape telling people the road was closed, but I doubt anyone would want to cross it. It was quiet there too, no one else taking photos, unlike at Xeros where there were quite a few people taking in the spectacle (plus, naturally, an ice cream van, though I didn't see anyone buying one!)

I would not try to reach Xyliatos dam using the roads around Kyperounda as there are too many rockfalls and these roads were closed the last days. If you are so desperate I would drive from the other side of Troodos mountains (Nicosia side) via Ayia Marina, Xyliatos. I was there 2 month ago and the dam was nearly complete empty while rockfalls happen in this valley even in summer..

Thanks Max. I'm not sure I'd go anyway, it's a long drive and I would imagine after a couple of dry days the waterfall wouldn't be nearly as impressive. If I'm still tempted on Saturday I'll see what I can find out about road conditions.

Go to Trozena if you want to see a spectacular waterfall. In the process of uploading a film now...

For a bit of bumf on Trozena (without the waterfall) check out the blog:

Thanks Dominic. I saw your Trozena video last night. I may well do that, it's a lot closer than Xyliatos! I have stumbled across the Trozena waterfall before, which was a complete surprise, though it was obviously a lot more impressive in your video. I guess it will have calmed down a bit by tomorrow.

And it's always fun to drive across the bridge!
