Ibrahim’s Khan, an historic building in the heart of Paphos old town, will host its first interactive Christmas event on Saturday and a full day of entertainment including decorating a Christmas tree is planned.
Organised by the Ibrahim’s Khan event and promotion team along with Paphos municipality, entrance is free and it will get underway at 11am.
Artists and artisans occupy the individual units at the newly renovated Khan. Historically, the ancient building was used as an inn and an area where merchants and craftsmen would come together.
There are sixteen units altogether, including an olive house, a carob workshop, traditional products, jewellery, mosaics, wood carving, painting, chair-making and pasta-making workshops and a new restaurant. There is also a theatre space with a stage that is available to hire.
Team member and well-known mosaic artist Sharen Taylor also has a workshop at the Khan, and told the Cyprus Mail that the event will be an interesting day out for all of the family.
“We want to encourage people to come and visit us at the Khan as some people still don’t know that we exist.”
As well as the resident artists and craftspeople, a number of guest workshops will also be hosted at the space at the ‘Christmas Spirit at Ibrahim’s Khan’ event. Most are interactive and will invite members of the public, both children and adults to participate, she said.
“The Christmas tree has just been put up and all of the decorations will be hand made by the public on the day,” she said.
A workshop on how to make decorations and decorate a Christmas tree will conclude with participants placing their creation on the 6m high fir tree.
Jewellery maker Stephanie Socratous, also a member of the Khan’s organising team, said that the programme will also include, wine tasting, oil tasting, making carob products, gingerbread and waffle making and fabric stamping.
“People will be able to stamp fabric and postcards at various workshops, they will also dress the tree and there will be other activities and workshops too,” she said.
Homemade soups by Beatriz bistro and hot chocolate will be on offer and stilt walkers and a full music programme will keep the public entertained, she said.
Accordion player, Stavros Savs, will play from 11am-1pm, followed by Pavel on saxophone until 3pm and DJ George Kara will also play from 11am to 4pm.
“The musicians and DJ will lay together at some points,” said Taylor.
Visitors will be able to try their hand at mosaic making at Taylor’s workshop and also view the mosaic map of Ibrahim’s Khan that was created by children of Paphos as part of the artists’ summer school workshop, 2018.
The mosaic will be placed on a wall of the Khan at a later date.
