Limni project is now down to EU

Post by Paphos Life »

The green light granted to the controversial Limni Bay project in the form of a planning permit might not be enough just yet for the development to go ahead as the ongoing European Commission infringement case against it requires the permits comply with the environmental recommendations set out by the Commission....

This is interesting news. Can anyone remember what shennanigans went on before the construction of the Anassa Hotel was allowed to go ahead? I remember there was a prolonged legal battle, as it was being built on a turtle beach which was supposed to be a protected site...
The Limni mine project is not in the Natura 2000 Akamas area.

I don't understand the fuss about the turtle laying area next to the pier of the Limni Mine. In the past (late 80's) there was not one turtle seen, but a lot of yellowish brown sulphureous sand washed from the mine into the sea in winter rain. There was never anybody laying or swimming there as the smell alone was bad enough in the summer heat. On the other hand there were always turtles near the camp site and even next to the harbour in Latchi and nobody had even the idea the stop the camp site or the restaurants been built on the beach. I remember several times while having lunch at Porto Latchi that tiny turtles were walking between my feet under the dinner table...So obviously since the Mine closed, the conditions at the beach there changed to the better and hence nature came back and with it the turtle nests now. They moved from the other areas, mentioned before as it became too busy for them and they will move again if the Limni area becomes touristic.

By the way: The villa next to the mine belongs to one of the most powerful figures in the present Government, next to the Prasident, Mr.Averof, leader of DISY, and he was for sure knowing what he was doing to built just there...

As I mentioned in an previous post I prefer that the project goes ahead with golf etc to change the whole area into something nicer than it is left now as one can see at pics from Dominic's Limni blog where it looks like on the Moon... :(

Before you make assumptions about me and my green ideas I can tell you that I was the first organic farmer in the Polis area, 30 years ago, with the aim to teach my Cypriot neighbours that their citrus fruits will also grow well, even better, using the eco-friendly way. With organic farming I could even prove with my own trees (Mineola), that it is possible to control the phyllocnistis citrella pest (Citrus leaf miner) without using nasty pestizides, like Confidor etc.

If you are sooo concerned about the turtle nests, where YOU are living near the sea and the 200 nests, than you shouldn't have moved there in the first place .... (light pollution, walking at the beach etc.) I am sure you did not know about the turtles when you settled there a few years ago, though. :)

Better take some more pictures of the natural beauty of Cyprus, before it disappears.

Well the area around the mines was a bit of a wasteground according to Dominic’s recent blog, but I agree with you, as it could have been lanscaped naturally with trees. Every time I see that a developer has launched some new ‘get rich quick’ development, close to the coast, I tend to think here goes another unbuilt up area which in due course will be covered by more concrete in various guises. How long will it be before most of the unspoilt areas of coastline in the Republic go in the name of development.. ? I am relieved that some parts of the coastline are still under the jurisdiction of the SBA’s who do look after them. What’s more they are pristine, no rubbish or abandoned cars, furniture or dumps.
