Vicky, it's not the Peyia mukhtar, but the mayor of Peyia. Two different persons.

Re: New Peyia Mukhtar chasing unpaid taxes!
Funny enough I have just been presented with a bill for my two Labradors dating back to 2014.
I honestly never new we had to pay yearly for the dogs.
I am going up to pay in the next couple & confirm that this is correct.

I don't see any reference to 'expats renting out holiday homes' in that article...?Flossie wrote: ↑Tue Feb 14, 2017 7:35 am http://cyprus-mail.com/2017/02/14/peyia ... ax-cheats/
Expats renting out holiday homes will also be targeted and failure to pay may result in utility cuts!

Are you DollyDaydream1 from the other site...?
Re: New Peyia Mukhtar chasing unpaid taxes!
I wonder if they will be collecting unpaid taxes and water bills from the Hotels in Coral Bay... And if they don't pay up will they be cutting off the utilities ???

Although it does not use the wording Ex Pats it does refer to people who rent out their holiday homes - people of all nationalities I assume and rightly so in my opinion - treat businesses and home owners alike.

Re: New Peyia Mukhtar chasing unpaid taxes!
Unless I've read a different article, it does mention expats...
“The other biggest problem I am having is with expats who have holiday homes here, it’s hard to track them down and they owe money.”
Lambrou said that the total overdue amount owed by those with holiday homes in Peyia that visit perhaps only once a year was ‘substantial’ and added that he was getting tough with all non-payers.
...but makes no reference to the expats' holiday homes being rented out...

Can you confirm that you are distinguishing between the Muktar of Peyia village and the Mayor of Peyia region/area?LouiseCastricum wrote: ↑Tue Feb 14, 2017 8:39 am Vicky, it's not the Peyia mukhtar, but the mayor of Peyia. Two different persons.

Louise, I've read the article which refers to the Mayor. I only commented to get a clarification of the distinction you brought up as there are some on here not familiar with Mayor/Muktar concept. If the distinction I tried to define is incorrect please say so but please let us know who the 2 distinct people that you mentioned are.LouiseCastricum wrote: ↑Tue Feb 14, 2017 12:05 pmPete, just read the article.PeteandSylvi wrote: ↑Tue Feb 14, 2017 10:57 amCan you confirm that you are distinguishing between the Muktar of Peyia village and the Mayor of Peyia region/area?LouiseCastricum wrote: ↑Tue Feb 14, 2017 8:39 am Vicky, it's not the Peyia mukhtar, but the mayor of Peyia. About time! Too many people have been allowed to get away without paying for far too long. Seems like Peyia's mayor is following in the footsteps of the Paphos mayor, not a bad thing!

Pete I just meant that in this case it was the mayor who is going to chase unpaid taxes. If you or others want to know the difference between a mayor and a mukhtar I'm sure google will be your friend also in this case.

Re: New Peyia Mukhtar chasing unpaid taxes!
Since being in Cyprus I have used the 2 words interchangeably like everyone else I know. You raised the distinction so I'd like you to tell me and everyone else what it is. Why refer me to Google when you have the knowledge which you obviously felt was important enough to bring up in the thread?LouiseCastricum wrote: ↑Tue Feb 14, 2017 1:34 pm Pete I just meant that in this case it was the mayor who is going to chase unpaid taxes. @Pete
May be this article made it clear what the difference is between Mukhtar and Mayor...

Thank you for that. It certainly adds to the confusion as it does not make it clear but seems to introduce another definition.cyprusmax47 wrote: ↑Tue Feb 14, 2017 1:41 pm @Pete

So now can anyone enlighten me as to whom I voted for this year. Was it our village Muktar or Mayor or Community Council Leader or Community Registrar? All I can say is that when I refer to a Muktar or Mayor, both Cypriots and Brits know who I'm referring to and its the same person.

In Peyia we voted for a Mayor and for a Council Member. I assume in Kannaviou you voted for a mukhtar and a council member.

Yes we voted for 2 people. A council member and a Muktar/Mayor.LouiseCastricum wrote: ↑Tue Feb 14, 2017 1:54 pm In Peyia we voted for a Mayor and for a Council Member. I assume in Kannaviou you voted for a mukhtar and a council member.
As I've said before the terms are used interchangeably.

Ask any Cypriot: A Mayor would be insulted if one calls him mukhtar...
Re: New Peyia Mukhtar chasing unpaid taxes!
I wonder, also, how many of these so called holiday homes are let out to "friends and relatives" for short breaks and if any income tax is being paid on that income?

Our Muktar is a Cypriot. He's never been insulted by it.cyprusmax47 wrote: ↑Tue Feb 14, 2017 2:04 pm Ask any Cypriot: A Mayor would be insulted if one calls him mukhtar...
From Wiki: Mukhtar (also spelled Muktar, /ˈmʊktɑːr/) meaning "chosen" in Arabic: المختار, is the head of a village or mahalle (neighbourhood) in many Arab countries as well as in Turkey and Cyprus.[1][2] The name is given because mukhtars are usually selected by some consensual or participatory method, often involving an election.
Perhaps your insulted Cypriots are insulted because they may not be called Muktars in Greece!
