Raised footpath, Monorail..

Post by trevnhil »

We have got used to the rusty raised footpath that is a feature across the road to the harbour. But our daughter and family are here and asked us about the monorail :-)

Does anyone have any up to date information on it at all ??

I don't think it was ever gonna be a monorail, Trev, despite maybe looking like one under construction... A high level walkway is what it is, if they can ever finish it, that is...

A terrible shame if they don't, after all the money poured into Paphos over the last couple of years. Left as it is, it's a glaring example of Municipialty grandiose ideas gone terribly wrong, for thousands to see every day...

Yes, I heard that the contractor had gone bust. I guess another tender to finish it in a couple of years time after all the tender appraisals are complete and a fresh contract is let to a serious (sound) bidder

According to a sign on the site, the contractor was celebrating 70 years of business!

Well, as we have been witnessing recently in the UK, it doesn’t matter how long you have been in business, if the customers aren’t there & your financial arrangement isn’t good, the receivers are called in!

No, the walkway was always intended to be just that. It’s main purpose was to link the two archaeological sites, the ones on Fabrica Hill, with the main sites in the Archaeological Park, a UNESCO site. The idea was to avoid pedestrians having to cross the main harbour road, Agios Pavlos. But it was supposed to be constructed ready for the big PAFOS 2017 capital of culture last year! As it was work didn’t start until around Nov 2017! So obviously it had missed the boat as regards timing. I heard that it was PAFOS who had run out of funds to finish it! But who knows...
Anyway, it is probably now surplus to requirements as the moment has passed . Also, it was supposed to have been placed so that it would be possible to see all the archaeological sites on Fabrica from the walkway, but that hasn’t really been achieved as probably it wasn’t positioned correctly. Also depite the efforts of the French archaeologist who found and worked on the Roman villa opp the Mall, to have the supports for the walkway positioned so one coukd see the,Roman Villa from the walkway, without the walkway supports damaging her work, in her absence, the.works and bricks dept just moved parts of the remains of the Roman Villa out of the way of their construction. Thus disturbing the ancient site! This is PAFOS..
