Police defends arrest of woman in Coral Bay hit and runFishermen who helped pull out a woman from a car believed to have been used in a hit and run which led to the death of one Briton and the injury of another, said she was in a state of shock and shouting “we killed them, I don’t want to go to prison,” Philenews reported on Monday.
The fishermen had rushed to her rescue after the 35 year old driver of the car drove it into the sea early on Sunday morning, the site added.
Both the man and woman are in police custody.
Philenews said that second Briton who was taken to Paphos Hospital where he is reported to be out of danger told police that the car had come straight at him and his friend, with clear intent to hit them.
The suspect, who is a father of two and expecting a third child, is reported to deny the incident was deliberate, saying it was an accident.

Police on Wednesday defended its decision to arrest a 23 year old woman following what police think was a deliberate hit and run in Coral Bay last Sunday which led to the death of one Briton and the injury of another.
It said that it always acted within the law in its effort to fully investigate a suspected case of premeditated murder. The woman was in the car driven by a man, who is also in police custody. Eye witnesses had told police the two Britons had intervened when the man assaulted the woman at a Coral Bay bar, a little before the incident.
Critics have said that the woman is a victim of family violence and not a culprit and called for her immediate release.

From the above information it sounds like a couple of decent lads stopping a bully. Very sad either way.

A 23 year old woman remanded in police custody following Sunday’s hit-and-run near Coral Bay that led to the death of a Briton and the injury of another was released without charge on Thursday.
The woman, who is Greek, was in the car driven by a 35 year old man who remains in police custody as police probe premeditated murder and attempted murder. He is suspected of having driven deliberately into the two Britons because they intervened when he assaulted the woman at a bar.
The woman was released after a police investigation determined that there was no evidence linking her to the actions of her companion. She is likely to be called as a witness for the prosecution.
Eye witnesses told police that she had exited the car after the incident screaming “you killed them, I do not want to go to jail.” Fishermen who rescued her after her companion drove their car into the water at Ayios Georgios told police she was in a state of shock. They said the 35 year old had gone to shore without trying to help her.
Police are continuing their investigation with dozens of statements taken from the bar, the scene of the hit-and-run and the port. Closed circuit TV footage from the area is also being examined.
The police had earlier been criticised for arresting the woman. Critics said she was a victim of family violence and should be released immediately.
