Watch where you are walking!
Watch where you are walking!
I posted these pics from my phone while out walking on the Akamas. They get posted to the Paphos Chat facebook group, but I appreciate that not everybody here is a member there. So I am sharing them here too.
This is a remote gorge, near Avakas. It looks stunning at the moment.
However, you need to watch where you are walking in remote places like this. I nearly trod on this. I have nearly trodden on two adders in my adventures in Cyprus. Both of them have been in this gorge.
Luckily, second time around I was more alert, so didn't injure myself avoiding it.

Anywhere with water is a snake magnet, particularly when the temps start to climb.
Glad your encounter was uneventful!!

Here's a video showing how to get to the canyon.

It should be nice and smooth, too.

I have seen blunt nose vipers at snake georges about 10 years ago but none were that big. It looks like a bloody Anoconda

Re: Watch where you are walking!
I never realised that the roads and tracks out there are as good as they are until I saw your video Dominic. So far we have not ventured beyond the Last Castle and Lara Beach, so when I get our lightning fried car back we need to be a bit more adventurous. We haven't nearly fallen into any ravines lately! Can I ask where to pick up that good stretch at the start of your video.? GPS coordinates would be ideal if not easy to describe.
Re: Watch where you are walking!
Bear in mind that the video uses stabilisation to smooth out the bumps. But the route from Pano Arodes to this track is definitely suitable for all vehicles. I wouldn't do the last bit in a regular car though. There are a few places freshly eroded by the rain.2QuarterPints wrote: ↑Tue Jun 12, 2018 4:01 pm I never realised that the roads and tracks out there are as good as they are until I saw your video Dominic. I started filming about here.

You can follow the track back to Pano Arodes easily enough. I think somebody has recently put a cache trail there too, along the nature trail.

Be careful how far you drive down that road though. Once you get closer to Avakas Gorge it gets a lot bumpier.
