Hi all
I’ve recently started work and the firm and I are paying social insurance....the contract is until end of October so it’s seasonal, but will commence again next yr for next years season
As a novice, what does this entitle me to with regard to payment in the down time and health cover.
Many thanks

Hi Sadie
You need to work for at least 26 weeks to qualify for unemployment benefit but you must have made contributions in previous years in order to qualify. Its a bit confusing but the 1st Monday in July is the start of what is called the 'Benefit Year'. If you make a claim in say April 2019, you will have to have made qualifying contributions in 2017 (called the 'Relevant Contribution Year'). If you make a claim after July in 2019, they will count your qualifying contributions in 2018. So for a claim at the end of this season, it would be based on contributions you made in 2017. Unemployment benefit is for a maximum of 156 days and is at around half pay. The scheme is pretty much set up to cater for the regular seasonal workers in Cyprus who are laid off in the winter months. You would have to sign on at the Employment office and be available for other work in order to claim benefit.
If you don't have a national insurance contribution record for the last 3 years from another country then you will have to wait until you have contributed to the social insurance fund for 3 years in order to qualify for a medical card. Before then it'll be pay as you go at the general or pay privately.
Hope this helps.
